Good morning Governor Mifflin School District Families:
I am writing to you today to inform you of an incident which occurred this morning on the grounds of Mifflin Park Elementary and Governor Mifflin Intermediate School. During morning drop-off, two minor individuals were seen in the far corner of the Intermediate School parking lot near the transportation building. These individuals were quickly identified as not being Governor Mifflin School District students and were stopped by our School Police Officer as well as officers of the Cumru Township Police Department. These individuals and their belongings were searched and, unfortunately, an air soft gun and several kitchen knives were found in their possession. These individuals were immediately taken into custody. Because this is a police matter, we are not able to share any additional details at this time.
We are incredibly thankful to our staff members, School Police Officers, and Cumru Police Department for their vigilance and swift action, which enabled us to swiftly identify a potential threat and remove the individuals from campus without incident. We would also like to commend our School Police Officers for adhering to our district’s safety and security protocols, which allowed us to ensure a safe and orderly school arrival despite these circumstances.
I want to take a moment to remind parents that, while this is undoubtedly an unsettling occurrence, especially in light of the incident which occurred Friday, August 28, the outcome of this situation is one of the best that we could ask for and is due to the strong partnership between our local law enforcement, as well as the thorough training and preparedness of our staff, administration, and Safe Schools team. Thank you, once again, to these individuals for keeping our schools safe, both in the day-to-day operations as well as in unforeseen circumstances.
Sincerely,
Dr. Lisa Hess
Superintendent
Governor Mifflin School District
