🎼 “She Made Me Want to Love Music Again”: HS Band Director Kelsey Pudlas Named Tiger Talent 💜💛

“From the very moment she joined Sherrard, Ms. P made an immediate and positive difference.”

That’s how 2025 Sherrard grad Max Serre described High School Band Director Kelsey Pudlas, this month’s Tiger Talent recipient chosen by High School Principal Alex Johnson.

When Ms. Pudlas first arrived at Sherrard, the high school band numbers were in the high teens and low 20s. Today, that number has nearly doubled into the upper 30s, alongside a growing junior high program of about 30 students, according to Johnson.

Colleagues and students say that growth is direct proof of her dedication. “Her dedication helped the program grow to a point where our marching and concert bands are competing at a very high level,” said Serre, adding that Ms. P actively connects students to larger regional ensembles, state competitions, and local music groups.

That commitment shows up year-round. From taking time out of her summer for one-on-one rehearsals to planning trips to Disney World, students say she is constantly working behind the scenes. “The uniform fittings and just making sure we have buses to get to the competitions and all the music that she has to print out... it's just a lot,” said SHS senior Abi Fardi-Turkmani.

Her efforts also bring a strong community feel to school athletic events.

“We have the best pep band in the state,” said Johnson (also SHS basketball coach). “Kelsey might be one of our best coaches that we have. And one of our toughest coaches as well. Every year they have band camp a couple weeks in the summer that they are outside every single day in the heat... and the fact that she can do that and the kids can buy into that just speaks volumes.”

Students describe her classroom as both challenging and supportive. “She always pushes us to do our best and challenges us with pieces that we may not know well,” senior Jackson Lindley said. Sherrard grad Lillie Estes added, “She made me want to love music again.”

Other students noted her approachable and caring nature, whether she’s dropping unexpected jokes during rehearsal or lending an ear when someone needs to talk.
That supportive culture has inspired students to turn their passion into a lifelong pursuit. Several credit Ms. Pudlas directly with their decision to continue band in college or pursue degrees in music education.

“I'm going to Western Illinois to study music education to be a band director like Ms. P,” said Sherrard grad Vivian Shivers. “And she is honestly the one that's inspired me to follow most of that path.”

“The band here is truly my family,” Estes, who still hangs out with ‘band mates’ post high school, and even plans to return from college, like others before her, to support band performances.

Superintendent Dr. Carl Johnson implemented the ‘Tiger Talent’ award for: “...those who model, build and encourage positive character qualities - speaking into students’ lives by word and deed that will resonate for years to come and help guide them to become the leaders and contributing community members of tomorrow.”

She received a golden metal apple with “Tiger Talent” inscribed to commemorate her dedication to Sherrard Schools.

📚 A little Boggle to wrap up the day!

With very little homework on Day 3, 8th grade study hall with Mrs. Drish had some time for a little friendly competition.

Students put their word skills to the test with a game of Boggle before heading home!

Learning doesn’t always have to look like homework! 💜💛
