Bringing back the importance of thank you notes! I was very impressed with the childen’s ability to put pen to paper and show gratitude for something and someone. It can be a lot at this age group but they did amazing! (Bonus: Some were addressed to me! Whaaat? So sweet!!)

The first Children’s Etiquette 101 Workshop was a success! This was a wonderful, smart group of Class Acts. Congratulations to the graduates!

We practiced introductions, table manners and different dining styles, read a book about telephone manners, and wrote thank-you notes. Such a fun and enriching morning!

I've received a few questions regarding the Children's Etiquette 101 Workshop for Ages 6 - 11, being held on Saturday, November 8 and thought I would answer them here:

1. Is this workshop for both boys and girls?
Absolutely! A good mix of boys and girls is highly encouraged in the lessons about introductions and approaching the table.

2. Will there be classes offered for preteens?
Yes, it's in the works! I'm starting with ages 6-11 for now because my own children are in this age group and it's where I'm most familiar.

3. Where will this workshop be held?
The first few sessions I offer will actually be from my house. The formal dining room will be set up for a four-course meal. I can also visit locations if event space is available, and eventually I will be able to rent out space as this business grows.

I am delighted to announce that enrollment is now open for the Class Act Etiquette LLC's first-ever Children's Etiquette 101 Workshop on Saturday, November 8 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, just in time for the holiday season!!

The class is limited to six children to ensure a personalized experience. Enrollment is open until November 1 or until the class is full, whichever comes first.

Cost is $40 per child and will include take-home guidance and a certificate of completion in addition to the lesson. Payment is due at time of booking through the website until I figure out invoicing.

This event will take place in Shepherdstown, WV, at a personal residence so the exact location will be shared with registrants only.

All about the Bread and Butter Plate!

The bread and butter plate is often a fixture of a fine dining place setting, but it actually serves two purposes. This blog post brings you a few etiquette facts and tips about the bread and butter plate:

1. The bread and butter plate is always on the left side of the dinner plate.
2. If you hold up your hands with your fingers straight and make a circle in each hand with your index finger and thumb, you will form a “b” and a “d” with your hands. This makes it easy to remember that “b” for “bread” goes on the left and “d” for “drink” goes on the right!
3. While the bread and butter plate is obviously used for your bread and butter, it is also your “trash can” plate because the plate can hold most anything extracted from the mouth (e.g., an olive pit, fish bone…).
4. The bread and butter plate usually has its own knife. You should butter your bread one bite at a time and between buttering, place it across the top of the plate.

Hi there! I'm still here and wanted to provide an update! The kids are back in school, and that means I can dedicate more time to set up my business. I am estimating around mid-October for classes to start. With that said, I'd like to take a poll for what days/times are best for people to schedule around extracurricular practices/activities. Keep in mind that the Etiquette 101 class will be 90 minutes to 2 hours and I know kids can be pretty tired after school. Here are the options I'm tossing around:

A: Weekdays after school, from 5pm - 7pm.
B: Saturday mornings from 10am - 12pm.
C: Saturday afternoons from 1pm - 3pm.
D: Sunday afternoons from 1pm - 3pm.

Other suggestions are welcome! I can also do a combination of these but I want to get an idea of what works for most people.

Today's etiquette tip is brought to you by Blue's Clues!

Who watched or had kids who watched Blue’s Clues? Remember Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper and their baby, Paprika? Brings back so many memories for me! This actually does have something to do with etiquette, however. The salt and pepper shakers are a set and are married. Therefore, the salt and pepper shakers should be passed together. Ask for the salt, you should also get the pepper. If someone at the table asks you to pass the pepper, the salt should be passed as well. Why should they be passed together? Check the answer in the comments!
