A Historic Summer: Shepherd’s 2026 History Interns

Join us on September 15, 2026, at 7pm in the Robert C. Byrd CHE Auditorium as Shepherd University History majors, Betsy Cushwa, William Faith, and Kelly Ramos, discuss their summer internships with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, Monocacy National Battlefield, and Antietam National Battlefield.

The panel discussion will also include commentary from Antietam Superintendent Andrew Banasik, Monocacy Park Ranger Tracy Evans, and the Civil War Medicine Museum’s Dana Shoaf and Melissa Winn.

This is a great opportunity to meet and support our students and hear about their amazing work at our area’s Civil War sites!

The Civil War Center’s Fall Conference Speaker Spotlight: Will Greene

Will Greene is a co-founder and former president and CEO of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites (today’s American Battlefield Trust). A sixteen year veteran of the National Park Service, Greene also served as Executive Director of Pamplin Historical Park. He is also the author of the magisterial multi-volume study on Petersburg, “A Campaign of Giants.”

SAVE THE DATE!

The Civil War Center presents… “In Lincoln’s Footsteps.”

Join us on Sunday, April 18, 2027, for a unique opportunity to learn more about President Abraham Lincoln’s visit to our region in the Fall of 1862 and his relationship with Major General George B. McClellan during the Antietam Campaign.

Our day will begin with a bus tour led by Dennis E. Frye, chief historian emeritus Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, that will explore sites associated with Lincoln’s October 1862 visit to Sharpsburg, Maryland.

Lunch at the Bavarian Inn (Shepherdstown, West Virginia) is included in the ticket price.

Our day will conclude with a presentation by Dr. Kenneth W. Noe, Draughon Professor of Southern History Emeritus, Auburn University, titled “Lincoln at Antietam.” Dr. Noe is the author or editor of nine books, including the recently published Abraham Lincoln and the Heroic Legend (LSU Press, 2026).

This event (9:00 AM until 4:00 PM) will cost $120 per person. Registration will be limited to one coach bus. Additional information on purchasing tickets will be shared later this summer.

Revenue generated from the Civil War Center’s ticketed events supports future programming and Shepherd student initiatives.
