FACULTY FEATURE: CAMILO PÉREZ-MEJÍA

What makes the cello so special? Maybe it's the rich, warm sound. Maybe it's the way it can sing a melody one moment and provide the foundation for an entire ensemble the next. Or maybe you just want to find out for yourself! 🎶

Meet Camilo Pérez-Mejía, our cello instructor AND Maestro for Shepherd Community Orchestra at Community Music at Shepherd!

Camilo brings a lifetime of performance, teaching, and ensemble experience to his students. But his lessons are about much more than simply learning how to play the notes. He wants students to become confident, expressive musicians who enjoy making music.

🎵 In lessons with Camilo, students can explore:

🎻 Building strong technique and fundamentals
🎶 Developing tone, intonation, and musical expression
🎼 Classical repertoire and performance skills
🤝 Learning how to play confidently with an ensemble
✨ Preparing for auditions, recitals, and performances
🌟 Building musicianship that lasts beyond the lesson

Camilo has performed throughout Colombia, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and the Mid-Atlantic region, and currently performs as principal cellist with the National String Symphonia and assistant principal with the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra and Loudoun Symphony Orchestra.

He's also passionate about helping musicians grow as part of a community. Camilo serves as music director and conductor of both the Charles Washington Symphony Orchestra and Shepherd University's Community Orchestra.

Whether you're holding a cello for the first time or looking to take your playing to the next level, Camilo is ready to help you find your sound.

🎶 Happy International Strange Music Day! 🎶

Today is the perfect excuse to listen to something a little… strange. 👀

International Strange Music Day is all about stepping outside your usual musical comfort zone and discovering sounds, instruments, genres, and artists that might be a little unexpected.

Maybe that means:
🎵 Listening to an instrument you've never heard before
🎻 Trying a completely different genre
🎤 Singing a song you normally wouldn't choose
🎶 Or simply asking, “What IS that sound?!”

At Community Music at Shepherd, we believe that curiosity is part of being a musician. Some of the most interesting musical discoveries happen when we're willing to try something new.

What if your voice lessons could help you become not only a stronger singer, but a more confident and expressive performer?

Meet Dr. Bobb Robinson, one of our voice instructors at Community Music at Shepherd!

With a career spanning opera, concert performance, cabaret, and musical collaboration, Bobb brings the real experience of the professional stage into his teaching. His goal is to help singers develop their technique while discovering how to communicate, connect, and tell a story through music.

Bobb has performed at venues including the Kennedy Center, Washington National Cathedral, the National Gallery of Art, and the White House, as well as major venues in the U.S. and Europe. He has performed more than 20 operatic roles and appeared as a soloist with nationally recognized ensembles.

But his passion for music goes beyond performing. Bobb is a dedicated educator who loves helping singers discover what their voices can do.

Did you know that learning an instrument can help strengthen skills that reach far beyond music?

When students learn to read music, keep a steady beat, listen carefully, and practice new skills, they’re also developing focus, memory, coordination, creativity, and perseverance.

And the best part? These skills grow through the process of making music. Every new song learned, tricky rhythm mastered, and practice session completed is another opportunity to build confidence and discover what you can do.

Violin & Viola | All Ages & Experience Levels

Have you ever wanted to learn violin or viola? Or maybe you're ready to take your playing to the next level?

Meet Heather Austin-Stone, a professional violinist and experienced educator who brings a wealth of performance and teaching experience to Community Music at

🎵 In lessons with Heather, students can explore:
🎻 Strong technique and fundamentals
🎼 Classical repertoire and musicianship
✨ Preparing for auditions and performances
🎶 Developing confidence as a solo and ensemble musician
🤝 Learning how to listen and play as part of a group

Heather performs regularly throughout the region and currently serves as Concertmaster of the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, Assistant Concertmaster of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and a first violinist with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed at venues including the Kennedy Center and as part of the Shenandoah Virtuosi String Quartet.

But her passion for music doesn't stop at the concert stage. Heather has years of experience teaching violin and viola to students of all ages, helping young musicians develop the skills and confidence to become independent players.

Whether you're picking up a violin for the first time, preparing for your next audition, or dreaming of performing with an ensemble, Heather is ready to help you grow.

Have you always wanted to learn piano, but weren't sure where to start? Or maybe you've been playing for a while and want to take your skills further?

Meet Jacob Livengood, one of our piano instructors at Community Music at Shepherd! 🎶

Jacob believes that great piano lessons should give students both the skills to play confidently and the freedom to enjoy making music.

In his studio, students can expect a supportive and structured environment where lessons are shaped around their individual goals and interests.
