A congratulatory tip of the cap to Shepherd University history students as they conclude their summer internships and prepare for the fall semester. Their commitment and enthusiasm have earned them wide praise from The National Museum of Civil War Medicine, Monocacy National Battlefield, and Antietam National Battlefield. The Shepherd University community can certainly be proud of the manner in which they represented themselves and their school. Well done!

Join acclaimed author and historian Megan Kate Nelson on Monday, June 29, at the Robert C. Byrd Auditorium on the Shepherd University campus for her presentation, "Three Days in November 1864, The US Army and Native Peoples in the Fight for the West."

This talk will consider three moments in the Civil War in the Southwestern theater in the fall of 1864: the failure of the first corn crop at the Navajo prisoner-of-war camp at Bosque Redondo in New Mexico, the 3rd Colorado’s massacre of Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho peoples at Sand Creek in Colorado, and Kit Carson’s last battle in the field against Kiowa and Comanche warriors at Adobe Walls in Texas.

This program is free and open to the public.

The annual Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College conference is always a highlight of the year for our director, and Saturday proved no exception!

From a thoroughly enjoyable conversation over lunch about growing up in Gettysburg with the venerable Dean Shultz and over 100 attendees, to a main stage presentation exploring General Meade's role and the 1864 Overland Campaign, it was a memorable day with fellow Civil War enthusiasts and scholars.
