Pirates in the Lab! 🏴‍☠️🧬

​Today, Coach LeBlanc’s 9th-grade Biology students stepped into the lab to put enzymes to the test! 🔬

​Our young scientists explored how the enzyme lactase breaks down lactose—and what happens when conditions aren't quite right. When temperature variables threw off the reaction, our Pirates didn't back down. They analyzed the unexpected data, adjusted their thinking, and used real evidence to form smart, scientific conclusions! 🧠💡

​Even when experiments don't go strictly to plan, real learning happens in the pivot. Proud of these Pirates for thinking like real scientists today!

Remembering Coach Jimmy Meekins

Jimmy Meekins passed away this week.

If you played for him, you knew Coach. If you sat in his classroom, or attended school while he was Principal, you knew a man who knew your name and cared. If you worked alongside him, you knew the steadiest man in the building. And if you simply lived in Shepherd, you knew the man who wanted the best for everyone.
Coach Meekins gave 51 years to public education, most of them to Shepherd High School. One sportswriter once called him "The Gentleman Coach of East Texas." His door stayed open, his candy jar stayed full, and he liked to say that at Shepherd High School he never worked a day in his life.
His son Marty put it this way: "He was a great man. A great dad. A great coach. And to more kids than just his own."
If Coach Meekins ever coached you, taught you, or sat you down in his office - you already know. And you probably still call him Coach.

A service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, August 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 111 Sumac Road, Huntsville.

The Meekins Family welcomes those who knew him to come and celebrate his life.

Heads up Coldspring and Shepherd folks, 8/22/26:

Trident Pipeline personnel reached out and advised that they will be pressure testing new sections of the pipeline. There will be loud releases of air and possibly vibrations in the ground. These are expected to happen sometime between Sunday and Monday morning. The locations are FM 1514 area and FM 1127 area.

Building Success, One Domino at a Time!

We kicked off English I by putting our habits to the test! Students began by creating domino structures with their desk partners before working together to build a domino chain. Along the way, they experienced firsthand how teamwork, communication, patience, and even the smallest actions can impact the success of the whole group.

Then came the twist! Once students stepped away, a domino was removed from the middle of each chain. When we tested the chains, students quickly realized that one missing domino could change the outcome.

That moment became the perfect bridge to our Capturing Kids’ Hearts Social Contract. Students reflected on the habits that help us succeed in English I, in our classroom, across our campus, and beyond. They grouped and discussed those habits before creating a social contract built around what they believe will make our class successful.

Sometimes the best way to understand the importance of our habits is to see what happens when one is missing!
