On the hottest afternoon of the summer, we didn’t look for shade.

We dragged striped towels and folding chairs onto the driveway, turned up the little transistor radio, and covered ourselves in enough tanning oil to shine from across the street.

Then the routine began.

Lie on one side. Check the watch. Turn over. Apply another coat. Repeat until supper.

Someone always took the timing seriously, as though we were following a scientific formula instead of slowly roasting on warm pavement. Meanwhile, Mom watched through the kitchen window, shaking her head while we insisted we were working on the “perfect tan.”

There were no beauty blenders, complicated skincare routines, or discussions about mineral ingredients.

Just a bottle of oil, a bright afternoon, cold lemonade, and complete confidence that we knew exactly what we were doing.

Looking back, we definitely know better now—but it’s hard not to laugh at how normal it all seemed.
