First field trip of the year is in the books. Friday I drove my students to LEF Climbing in Lexington. Before we left, they worked on the tie-in between rock climbing and being a lifelong learner.
I couldn’t be more proud of this group. They pushed themselves the whole time we were there.
Rock climbing is one of the greatest lifetime sports there is. Fun fact: we were only a hour from Red River Gorge, one of the top rock climbing destinations in the world.
Out of 49 students, hardly any had climbed before. Seven took a belay class on site and got certified to belay their friends.
Huge thanks to my district, school, and bus garage for making this possible.

Incredible day last Friday! My Advanced PE classes took on a five-mile canoe trip down Elkhorn Creek in Frankfort. For many of these students, it was a brand-new experience and a great introduction to a lifetime activity.
Leading up to the trip, we spent time practicing on the flat water at Lake Shelby, and last week they finally put those skills to the test. Fun fact: there is actually a float anyone can do from Lake Shelby to Red Orchard Park! Several students are already planning their next trip. Shout out to my district, school, and bus garage for helping make it happen!

Huge congratulations to our advanced PE students! This week, they completed their range day, the final step toward earning their official Hunter Education cards. This card is a requirement for hunting, and we are proud to offer this certification right here at SCHS. It’s been two years since I became certified to teach this course, and seeing these future Kentucky hunters prioritize safety and skill is an awesome perk of the job! Shelby County High School

Unforgettable day at our 2026 Fishing Trip! Today was all about mastering lifetime outdoor skills. From learning to tie a knot and baiting hooks to building a safe campfire, it was an overall great day.
The highlight is always seeing several students catch their first fish ever!

Last week, I drove my advanced PE classes to hit the tees at Topgolf to introduce the students to the #1 greatest lifetime sport of all time: golf. Leading up to last week, everyone received a 1-on-1 lesson to dial in their form. We also spent time discussing how critical thinking and strategy play a huge role in golf.
It was a fantastic day filled with growth and a few good swings!

Incredible week at for the National Convention. It’s always a highlight getting to present with the great Austin Olson. Excited to bring some new ideas back to Shelby.

Huge shoutout to one of my students for a great write-up of our ski trip in the local paper!

My Advanced PE classes had an awesome time last week mastering bowling skills. Proud of these students for diving into the sport by learning scoring methods and techniques.
Love seeing this group take on new challenges with a growth mindset.
