BIOMED STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: SYLVIA SCHMIDT
We are incredibly proud of Biomed student Sylvia Schmidt, who is taking her passion for scientific research all the way to NASA!
Sylvia is currently an Open Science and Research student through NASA. She has already earned her Open Science Essentials certificate and is now working toward her Open Science 101 certificate. Through these courses, she is learning how open science makes research more accessible, allowing people and communities to understand, reproduce and build upon scientific discoveries.
Sylvia credits the Biomed pathway with inspiring her passion for research:
“I enjoy our labs and research so much, and I’m glad I can combine what I’ve learned in Biomed with NASA’s open science courses.”
She has also begun attending NASA meetings to explore different STEM careers—giving her the incredible opportunity to speak with a panel of experts and even an astronaut!
Her next goal is to apply for NASA’s summer GeneLab research program, where students study astrobiology and may participate in a team capstone competition. Winning teams can earn the opportunity to present their research at the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research conference!
Sylvia, we are so excited to see where your curiosity, determination and love of research take you. Keep reaching for the stars!
