Cottage Learning Cottage Learning offers hourly academic, homesteading, and agricultural classes for students 6-14 years old.

Classes will begin September 2026 at Fox Run Farm located in Cleveland County, NC.

Knowing the difference between exposure and mastery can make or break a lesson. Today, we played a game that I shared a few weeks ago. Pull a deck card and decide which number to add to the deck card to make 10.

That’s not a 4 year old skill, but he wanted to play. The solution—give him a numbers chart and let him count up. That’s exposure with no expectation of mastery, but for his brother, we were shooting for mastery.

Use prompts or manipulative to expose the younger children to concepts that are not necessarily developmentally appropriate. It will pay off a few years down the road, and there’ll be less tears and frustration today.
