Congratulations to Matt Greene, our 2026 CTE Teacher of the Year!

Matt, an Agriculture teacher at Crest High School, does an exceptional job making an impact in the classroom, throughout Crest High School, in our community and at the state level.

A proud Crest High School alumnus himself, Matt has built a teaching career that includes time in both Cleveland County Schools and Wilkes County Schools. His experience and dedication to agriculture education have helped him make a difference for countless students and have made him a strong advocate for Career and Technical Education.

Matt's commitment goes well beyond the classroom. He creates meaningful opportunities for students, supports his school and community, and represents CTE with professionalism and passion at the state level.

🎉 200 Student Interns...and we're just getting started!

Today we're celebrating an exciting milestone for the Cleveland County Schools CTE Work-Based Learning Program—our 200th student intern!

Congratulations to Cooper Davis, a senior at Burns High School, who recently completed his internship at Cottonwood Veterinary Hospital. Throughout the semester, Cooper gained invaluable hands-on experience in animal handling and restraint, preparing vaccines, patient care, medical testing, and the teamwork and communication skills that are essential in any career. His exceptional work ethic, enthusiasm, and positive attitude made him a standout intern, and we're incredibly proud of all he accomplished.

Programs like Work-Based Learning are changing lives by connecting highly motivated juniors and seniors with real-world experiences that transform classroom learning into career readiness. Students gain professional skills, confidence, career clarity, and meaningful connections with mentors who invest in their future.

This milestone wouldn't be possible without our outstanding business partners who open their doors, share their expertise, and help shape tomorrow's workforce. Thank you for believing in our students!

As we celebrate #200, we're already looking ahead. Our goal is to continue expanding partnerships with businesses across all career fields so that even more Cleveland County Schools students have the opportunity to explore their passions, build valuable skills, and prepare for successful futures.

Interested in becoming a Work-Based Learning partner? We'd love to connect and help develop the next generation of our workforce—together!

Week two of the Transportation Summer Accelerator (TSA) is in full swing and the students have been staying busy.

Students visited the NC Department of Transportation Equipment Facility and Maintenance Yard where they got a close-up look at the operation and even got hands-on time with heavy equipment like a backhoe loader, mower, and sprayer. The experience also included a visit to the construction site of the new Highway 74 Bypass.

TSA is a hands-on summer experience and pre-apprenticeship opportunity for ten Burns High School students. Now in its third year, the program is a partnership between Cleveland County Schools, Career and Technical Education, and the NC Department of Transportation and it is one of only five TSA programs in the state.

Throughout the program, students earn three valuable certifications: CPR and Work Zone Flagger through the NC Safety and Health Council, and OSHA 10-hour certification. After successfully completing the certifications and the two-week program which includes classroom instruction, simulations, and field experience, students receive a $500 stipend, a laptop, and a mobile hotspot with one year of prepaid service.

Big learning, real-world experience, and a strong start toward future careers in transportation!

What an incredible week at our Rising 6th Grade Career Discovery Camp! Students explored exciting career pathways through hands-on simulations in engineering, robotics, environmental science, flight principles, health science, and more.

A special thank you to our guest speakers, Katie Scism (Vet Tech, Cleveland Community College), Jimmy Boheler (JB Drone Solutions), and Kaitlin Hollowell and the surgical/anesthesiology team (Atrium Health Cleveland) for sharing their expertise and inspiring our students.

Campers also enjoyed engaging STEM activities with KidSenses and wrapped up the week with outdoor exploration at Broad River Greenway alongside David Caldwell, MountainTrue’s Broad Riverkeeper, and Amanda Strickland from Cleveland County Soil & Water Conservation.

Thank you to all of our partners for helping students discover new interests, explore careers, and connect learning to the world around them!
