We spent Indigenous Peoples Day at school, with focused programming from the Early Childhood through the High School. Our young students learned about local ecology, shared Three Sisters soup, and watched a puppet show based on an Indigenous story. The Lower and Upper Schools each had a community lunch, made with local ingredients, and our sixth graders made Big Dipper star cookies for dessert. Our high school students heard about the spiritual and culinary aspects of Indigenous cooking from a local Indigenous chef before breaking off into workshops about a variety of topics related to Indigenous history and contemporary culture. Thank you to everyone who put this wonderful programming together!

Despite the rain, we had a wonderful Harvest Festival! Our all-school play taught the benefits of working together and, of course, proper drainage and irrigation systems! Our potluck was delicious, as always. We loved seeing the students engaged in a variety of activities from apple pressing, to face painting, to bread-baking over a fire. Thank you to all of the volunteers from the faculty and the community that made the event possible. What a beautiful way to welcome in the fall season.

Our high schoolers got up close and personal with cells! Our brand new oil immersion microscopes allow a crystal clear look at the structure of a variety of samples, including frog skin, cork, and spirogyra cells. Each of these samples represents a moment in scientific history – students moved chronologically through history along with the pioneers of Cell Theory. They then drew what they saw in through the microscope, just as early biologists had to do to share their findings.

Whether watching butterflies emerge from their chrysalises, building mountains of sand, exploring the woods, stomping through the mud, or enjoying an outdoor meal, our Early Childhood students have been soaking up the last of the warm weather! We believe in nurturing the innate curiosity, creativity, and imagination of our youngest children and that happens most fully when they’re given the time and space to explore the world around them, in and out of doors.

Our freshmen are building computers! By assembling each unit piece by piece, they learn exactly how the machines we use every day operate. Considering this project alongside our Cyber Civics program, our students receive a holistic technological education, understanding not only how to use technology, but how it’s made, how it functions, and how to engage with it ethically. Once complete, these computers will be used by our Robotics team!

Have you woven a basket today? Our students have! Basket weaving is a part of our robust handwork curriculum, which includes sewing, felting, knitting, quilting, and fashion design. As early as kindergarten, Waldorf students learn to work with their hands. Throughout their time here, they make a variety of beautiful and practical objects from bracelets, to toys, to clothing – even baskets! It’s amazing to see their personalities come through in their designs as they choose colors and shapes to work with. They are learning a practical skill, but they’re also learning that there is room for self expression in everything they do!

Field trips have begun! Our students have jumped right into the new year. Our fifth graders were one of the first classes to leave campus, visiting Intervale Center in Burlington to learn about local agriculture.

After a short but adventurous hike, the sixth grade spent time at Thrust Fault Cove, observing the contact point between two different types of rock that were pushed toward one another during the Taconic Orogeny, approximately 440 million years ago. They then traveled to New York on a multi-day caving trip, where they hiked the Great Ledge at Thatcher State Park, spelunked in the Clarksville Preserve, and visited the New York State Natural History Museum.

Coming up, our seniors are preparing for a weeklong trip to the Maine coast, while our ninth graders continue their study of Homer’s Odyssey before embarking on an odyssey of their own across Lake Champlain. We can’t wait to share their experiences!
