🇺🇸 Today, on International Day of the Girl, we celebrate all girls in our HIO family and across the world. Our call to action is clear. The message to end child marriage is especially meaningful to our Nepal community, where 42% of women from the poorest households marry before the age of 18. Early marriage perpetuates a lifetime of poverty.

Ten Reach for the Stars mentors led activities during our after school program to raise awareness about child marriage. Mentors talked through Nepal’s child marriage statistics with 50 younger HIO sisters and guided them in poster-making to express their concerns. Some of the girls’ mothers even joined to share ideas. Intergenerational experiences such as this are helping to encourage a strong sense of sisterhood within our community.

We’re so proud of our HIO girls for staying in school, raising their voices and becoming leaders in their communities. Happy International Day of the Girl!

🇳🇵 सानो संसार (HIO-Nepal) आज अक्टोबर ११ कोे दिन लाई विश्वले मनाउँदै गरेको बालिकाकोे विषेश उत्सव मनाउने काम भयो।

नेपालमा अझै ४२% महिलाहरू १८ वर्ष नपुग्दै बिबाह गर्ने गरेकोले स्वाथ्य सहित अन्य समस्या, चुनौती भोगिरहेका छन्।

सानो संसार का मेण्टर र किशाेरीहरूको अगुवाइमा ५० जना महिला र बालिका हरूको लागि चेतनामूलक कार्यशाला आयोजना गरिएको थियो। यस्तो फरक पुस्ताको संलग्नता कोे छलफलले एक अर्काको भावना बुझ्न सजिलो अनुभब भयो।

सबै बालिका हरुलाइ अन्तराष्ट्रिय बालिका दिवस कोे सुभकामना ।
बालविवाह अन्त्य गरौँ बालिका अधिकारको सुनिश्चित गरौं ।

🇺🇸 Healthy women and girls help build stronger, more empowered communities. At HIO, we believe that access to quality health care and education creates the foundation for women and girls to thrive.

Each year, HIO provides essential health services through community health camps offering dental and OB-GYN checkups. These camps grant access to preventive care to all, and flag participants for crucial follow up support on a case by case basis.

A heartfelt thank you to our valued partners, Ek Ek Paila Community Health Center and Henry Schein Cares, for making this initiative possible. Our shared investment in the health and education of our sponsored girls and their families empowers them to break a cycle of profound poverty in Nepal.

🇺🇸 Guru Purnima: A Day to Honor Teachers

Guru Purnima, or Teachers’ Day, is a special time for us to express gratitude and respect to the teachers, or in Nepali “gurus”, in our HIO family. We honor them for sharing their wisdom and guiding others to reach their dreams.

On this day, HIO’s learning centers were filled with immense joy. Students celebrated their teachers with flowers, red pens and beautiful handmade cards to mark another year of learning together.

Thank you to all the teachers in our community: our incredible learning center staff, our dedicated social workers and our older learners serving as mentors for their younger HIO sisters. Your tireless care and commitment to empower HIO girls and women to dream big and build brighter futures is an enormous source of inspiration.

At the heart of HIO’s educational sponsorship program are the beautiful connections between our girls in Nepal and the people who care for them from afar.

HIO girls often handwrite letters or send emails to their sponsors with the help of their case workers. Even though mail delivery in Kathmandu can be challenging, the bonds created through these thoughtful exchanges continue to grow. Each letter is a symbol of the deep support and human ties that bring HIO’s mission alive.

What a powerful affirmation it is for a child to know that someone halfway around the world cares about her and encourages her education. We’re deeply grateful to our sponsors, whose support makes these global connections meaningful and possible.

Catherine Miller is a long time dedicated HIO sponsor. She has been supporting Pramila, a ninth-grade student, while also making a meaningful contribution to the vocational training of the Be Part of Her Dream women’s empowerment program.

🇺🇸 We’re proud to celebrate HIO’s Coding Sisters!

Through HIO’s after-school program, several middle schoolers are learning basic computer coding. We’re so pleased to see our girls build critical thinking and problem-solving skills in this fun way.

Last month, our second cohort of Coding Sisters successfully completed the one year curriculum. Girls from the first cohort served as their mentors. What a wonderful opportunity to discover their potential as future leaders in tech. We expanded the project to include one of our partner schools this year. A new session is already underway!

Many thanks to all who support our STEM programming. Fostering girls’ love of technology and seeing them grow into confident role models is truly inspiring work.

🇺🇸 Education has no age limit.

We are proud to celebrate Sabita and Sharmila for successfully passing their Secondary Education Examinations. Despite dropping out of school at a young age to focus on family responsibilities, each of these remarkable mothers is fulfilling her dream to complete her education.

When a girl enrolls in HIO’s sponsorship program, her mother is eligible to join our Be Part of Her Dream literacy and empowerment classes. Sabita and Sharmila completed the 4-year core curriculum in under two years! With the support and encouragement of their teachers, they joined adult education classes to prepare for the 10th grade exam.

Sabita and Sharmila both plan to continue their education, at least through Class 12. This journey is a powerful example of courage, determination and the belief that it is never too late to pursue a dream.

At HIO, we believe that empowering women through education strengthens families and builds stronger communities. We’re grateful to all who believe in our HIO mothers and support them in creating a brighter future.

🇺🇸 Monsoon season in Nepal won’t keep HIO girls from learning!

Last month, HIO distributed raincoats and umbrellas to our sponsored girls, helping them travel to school safely. Every child deserves uninterrupted access to education, no matter the weather. Every day in school is a step toward a brighter future.

Our heartfelt thanks to all who support HIO’s wraparound services. Each new raincoat and bright umbrella is part of a larger effort to promote health and wellness essential for learning. Together, we’re empowering girls to keep their focus on school through every season.

With over two decades of experience in education, Lata has always believed that teaching is more than a profession, it's what brings her joy. Her passion for helping children learn and grow led her to join HIO as a teacher for our Be Part of Her Dream women’s empowerment program, where she also supported vocational skills training for women.

Through her dedication, leadership, and commitment to empowering both children and mothers, Lata took on the role of Lead Teacher at our Nayabazar Learning Center this year. Today, she continues to create a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where every child is encouraged to thrive.

🇺🇸 This year, HIO proudly welcomed 28 new girls into our sponsorship program!

The joy and promise of inviting new, young faces into our sisterhood makes this a very special time of year. Girls and their families from Kathmandu are carefully selected by HIO’s social work team and matched with sponsors who share our belief in the power of education. Many of our newly sponsored girls developed their love for learning at an HIO early learning center.

At an orientation session, each new girl received a backpack filled with school supplies and notebooks. It makes our hearts sing thinking of the many doors that will open ahead for them, thanks to the compassion and generous spirit of our HIO community. Many thanks for helping build brighter futures for all of our HIO girls.
