Great Lakes Writers Festival

Kathleen Heideman is one of the featured writers of 2019’s Great Lakes Writers Festival. She’s a writer, artist, and environmentalist based in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Her work can be seen in over two-dozen literary magazines and journals as wells as several anthologies. Her most recent collection of poetry is Psalms of the Early Anthropocene. Paul Hostovsky is one of the featured writers of 2019’s Great Lakes Writer Festival. In Boston, he’s a sign language interpreter and a Braille instructor. Author of ten books of poetry and five poetry chapbooks, he has won several awards, and his work has been featured on Poetry Daily, Verse Daily, and The Writer’s Almanac. The two featured writers, Christian Wiman and Barton Sutter, joined us for a panel discussion. The topic focused on The Many Ways of Saying God. They shared personal stories and connected with the audience. Christian Wiman also received an Honorary Doctorate from Lakeland University.

The Great Lakes Writers Festival featured two wonderful writers who shared poems and personal stories. Christian Wiman shared his poem “Hammer” which questions where God is in the midst of a storm. Barton Sutter shared from his book “Cold Comfort” which focuses on the cold Minnesota weather. Barton also received the Fellow Award during the event which celebrates his contributions as a writer.

"In recognition of his contribution to appreciation for the wonder and sheer beauty that is the region; with admiration for the significant range of roles he has assumed as award-winning multi-genre writer, conference facilitator, traveling performer, and educator; and in gratitude for his willingness to serve as an advocate of our endeavors; let it be known from this day forward Barton Sutter is hereby designated First Fellow of Lakeland University’s Great Lakes Writers Festival."
