The Trump administration is moving the Office for Civil Rights and the programs that support students with disabilities and their families out of the Department of Education.

This unprecedented political move would mean unqualified people leading some of the nation’s most crucial education programs—and the consequences for our students could be serious. Our students deserve better. Join us virtually to learn more and take action.

Bargaining Update: June 15th, 2026

Today’s negotiations focused heavily on compensation proposals, workload concerns, plan time, split positions, duty-free lunch, and proposal cost calculations.

The district presented their one proposal, which was a compensation proposal of a 2% increase. The 2% increase includes movement of eligible employees through the salary schedule (step movement), meaning the actual increase available beyond normal step advancement is less than 2% for many employees.

The bargaining team also continued advocating for:
• Compensation for employees serving in split positions
• Protection and expansion of educator plan time
• Equitable duty-free lunch language
• Fair compensation for increased workload and responsibilities

Several questions remain unanswered, and the Association has requested additional clarification from the district and has asked the district to provide their cost breakdown for all proposals the association has presented.

While NEA-KCK currently bargains on behalf of certified staff, we recognize that many of the workload and compensation concerns discussed at the table affect all employees across all our schools. We remain committed to strengthening our support and our ongoing organizing efforts for all public education employees within KCKPS.

Our next bargaining session is July 16th @ 5:30pm - 8:30pm, please join us in person or online, we will post the link here once it becomes available.

In Solidarity,
NEA-KCK

Today NEA-KCK hosted its first Building Rep Retreat under the leadership of incoming President LeAnne Richardson, Classified Vice President Averie Jackson and Certified Vice President Mia Ham, with an assist from Member Organizer Lead Callie Baker and Building Rep Kenya Harris.

With the theme, “Under Reconstruction: Building Our Bench” Building Reps were introduced to the new meeting structure which will now concentrate on skill building and Organizing. A new focus for President Richardson will be to open Building Representative meetings to all staff that wish to understand how their union operates. As Kenya told the group today, “if you want to know the benefit of being in the union, get involved.”

At KNEA, our core values help guide our work. Two of those core values are equitable opportunity and a just society. We believe all students have the human and civil right to a quality public education that develops their potential, independence and character. We also believe education is vital to building respect for the worth, dignity and belonging of every individual in our diverse and multicultural society.

Discrimination against anyone, including those who are LGBTQ+, violates our values. Educators, parents, students and communities are uniting across race, genders and place to demand safe and affirming schools where all students can learn, grow and thrive.

Join us in celebrating Pride Month during the month of June to celebrate the culture, achievements and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. It serves as a celebration of equality and a continuation of taking action for marginalized people.

Pride Month also honors the 1969 Stonewall Riots in Manhattan, a pivotal turning point for the modern gay rights movement. On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. Patrons and locals didn’t quietly disperse. Instead, the protested, sparking a multi-day uprising against harassment.

The first Prade pride took place on June 28, 1970, one year after the Stonewall Riots. It went from Greenwich Village to Central Park.
