💕🐶 In Memory of Moose 💕🐶
(Written by the one and only Casey Roman)
At [work], we do not have a C-suite. We have a D-suite. You know this if you've ever visited [our] office and been intercepted by our Fur Missile Blitzkrieg. Plenty of ill-prepared Door Dash drivers can testify. Those who left covered in dog glitter, mildly traumatized but very well tipped.
The dogs at [work] are venerated beings and our most valuable, beloved employees. As such, any news about them is major news to all of us. With immeasurable heartbreak we had to say 'goodbye' to Moose this Christmas and now wrap all our arms around his most wonderful human, Becky, our HR Director.
Genetically, Moose was part Great Dane and part St. Bernard. He was also part Couch Cow, part Sumo Wrestler, part Elephant Seal and part Three-Year-Old Toddler. He was 150% of Becky's heart.
There's often tremendous upside in not getting what we want in life. Becky wanted a Frenchie bulldog, which is essentially a cute football with ears. Scrolling through ads one day, her thumb passed over a photo of puppies with big, soulful eyes and paws that could hold up a building. The breeder was appropriately named: Big Ass Dogs. Becky's thumb stopped working. She was stuck on that photo and resolved to make the drive "just to look." (We all know how that goes...)
The B.A.D. house was packed with wobbly little House Hippos. Pup after pup wiggled away from her and took off playing. Except for one. When Becky put him down, he jumped right back into her arms. For the rest of his life, he'd have happily spent every moment in those arms if only he wasn't the size of a Mac truck.
On that day, Becky was warned that large dogs like Moose don't live but a few years. She looked at that puppy and replied, "Well I guess I'll just have to love him to death for each one of those few years." She made good on that promise.
Moose gave Becky a sense of safety. He even knew how to wake her up from bad dreams. Bonus Feature: When Moose dreamed of chasing squirrels, he'd "run" in his sleep. For Becky, that was the equivalent of being assaulted by four baseball bats. Before bed, Moose blocked her pillow until she delivered a treat. This was their nightly routine and this is what Becky will miss most. Those little everyday occurrences that become mundane are where all of our precious memories are stored as treasure.
Moose spent his life loving Becky wholeheartedly. So deeply that his physical heart couldn't keep up. In us, all dogs ultimately end up breaking the very heart that they made so whole. We all become better people once they enter our lives and we are never quite the same again when they leave it. We don't realize how greatly they've expanded our capacity to love until we experience their absence.
The D-Suite will be missing their lineman. Becky will forever be missing her Biggest Boi and very best friend. The rest of us will be remembering those slobber-filled jowls that could lacquer an entire leg, that Moose "hug" that necessitated a chiropractor visit and that melty look of his that made all of us want to tell him State Secrets.
Moose, may Heaven have peanut-butter filled treats, slower squirrels and windowless-car rides.
*Thank you, Casey Roman for the wonderful tribute!!*. ❤️
