I am incredibly proud to share that my 14-year-old student, Eason, has been invited to join the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) Junior Repertory Orchestra for the 2026–2027 season!

Selected from a record-breaking pool of more than 950 of New England's finest young musicians, Eason has earned a place in one of the nation's most prestigious youth orchestra programs.

This achievement reflects his exceptional talent, dedication, perseverance, and the many hours he has devoted to his musical growth. It has been a pleasure to watch him develop as both a flutist and a young musician, and I look forward to seeing all that he will accomplish in the years ahead.

πŸͺˆ Flute History + Trivia Challenge = A Great Day of Learning! πŸŽ‰

Another group also traveled through the fascinating history of the flute, discovering how our instrument evolved over centuries and meeting some of the remarkable people who shaped its development.

One of the highlights of the lesson was our lively debate: Team Tulou vs. Team Boehm!

Students defended opposite sides, discussing whether tradition or innovation should win. It was wonderful to see everyone thinking critically, supporting their arguments with historical facts, and confidently sharing their ideas.

To wrap up the lesson, we put everything we had learned to the test with a custom Flute History Jeopardy! game that I created. Questions covered flute evolution, composers, famous flutists, makers and inventors, and orchestra knowledge.

The competition was close, everyone participated enthusiastically, and we even crowned our Jeopardy champion, who took home a $15 Amazon Gift Card! πŸ†πŸŽ

But no one left empty-handed β€” every student received a prize for their hard work and participation.

History, teamwork, friendly competition, and plenty of laughter made for a fantastic afternoon.

These are the kinds of lessons that remind us learning music is about so much more than practicing notes β€” it is about discovering the stories, ideas, and people that shaped the instrument we love. πŸͺˆβœ¨

πŸͺˆ Flute History Comes Alive!

Who says music history has to be boring?

Today, our students traveled through more than 500 years of flute history β€” from Renaissance flutes and the Hotteterre family to Theobald Boehm's revolutionary invention and the famous rivalry between Boehm and Jean-Louis Tulou.

Instead of simply memorizing dates and names, we explored the stories behind the instrument, debated historical decisions, discovered fascinating inventions, and discussed how the flute evolved into the instrument we play today.

To finish the lesson, students put their knowledge to the test in a custom Flute History Jeopardy! game that I created especially for the class.

The questions covered composers, famous flutists, flute evolution, makers and innovators, and orchestra knowledge. The competition was close, the discussions were lively, and everyone discovered something new along the way.

One of my goals as a teacher is to help students understand that music is more than notes on a page.

Every instrument, every composition, and every performance is part of a much larger story β€” and the more we understand that story, the more meaningful our own music becomes.

Learning history doesn't have to feel like history. Sometimes, it feels like a game. πŸŽΆπŸ†

🎢 Future Flute Teachers in Action 🎢

One of my favorite parts of our Flute Pedagogy Course is watching students take their first steps as teachers.

Learning how to teach beginners is a skill that cannot be mastered from a book alone. It requires observation, communication, patience, creativity, and lots of practice.

Throughout the course, students work in pairs and small groups, taking turns playing the roles of both teacher and beginner.

They practice explaining fundamental concepts, demonstrating proper posture and hand position, correcting embouchure, and learning how to recognize common mistakes before they become habits.

These practice sessions are often filled with laughter β€” but they are also where real learning happens.

By teaching someone else, students quickly discover that understanding an idea and explaining it clearly are two very different things.

Watching them gain confidence, solve problems together, and begin thinking like teachers is one of the most rewarding parts of the program.

After all, every great teacher was once a beginner too. πŸͺˆβœ¨

As our record-breaking 2025–2026 season continues, I am delighted to celebrate several outstanding student achievements.

🌟 Eason has been accepted into three highly competitive ensembles for the 2026–2027 season:

πŸͺˆ NEC Preparatory School Baroque Chamber Orchestra
πŸͺˆ NEC Preparatory School Vivaldi Ensemble
πŸͺˆ Junior Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble (MYWE)

In addition, Eason was selected as an alternate for the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) Repertory Orchestra.

🌟 Solonga has been accepted into the Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble (MYWE) Concert Band.

🌟 Theresa was also selected as an alternate for the BYSO Repertory Orchestra.

With more than 950 applicants auditioning for BYSO this year, being selected as an alternate reflects a particularly strong audition and places these students among a highly accomplished group of young musicians.

I am incredibly proud of Eason, Solonga, and Theresa for their hard work, dedication, and continued growth. These achievements add to what has already been an extraordinary year of success for our studio.
