Art students at SHHS had a chance to work in the hallways of the high school to use one-point and two-point perspective drawing techniques. Students are working on developing architectural drawing designs.

Art Exposed 2019, the annual showcase of artwork by Shaker Heights Middle and High School art students, opens tonight at the Shaker Heights Main Library. Join the reception, which is free and open to the public, from 6:30-8 p.m. The show runs through May 22 and a selection of artwork will be for sale. Be sure to stop in and explore our students' creativity!

Mercer 3rd grade artists looked at the artwork by Jacob Lawrence and Faith Ringgold, identifying what stories the artists were telling in their work. Students practiced and then used gesture drawing to express daily life now or a goal for their future! They added details or colored in the silhouette before choosing lines and colors to create emphasis on the person they drew!

National Scholastic Winners from Shaker
Congratulations to four Shaker art students for their remarkable achievement at the National level of the Scholastic Art and Writing competition. Nearly 340,000 works of art and writing were submitted to the 2019 Scholastic Awards. Our students' work was selected by some of the foremost leaders in the visual and literary arts for excellence in originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Receiving a National Medal places our student(s) within the top 1% of all submissions! This is also the first year Shaker has had 4 students recognized at this level.
Jaia Briggs- Senior portfolio student received a silver medal for her painting Ebonee. Jaia will be attending the Cleveland Institute of Art and pursuing a degree in the fine arts.
Maria Maldonado- Senior portfolio student received a silver medal for her painting In the Mirror. Maria will also be pursuing a degree in the fine arts next year and is finalizing her choice of school from the top art institutions.
Aaliyah Williams- Junior painting student received a silver medal for her painting Diametrically Opposed.
Cole Wade- Senior portfolio student received a Gold medal for printmaking Stigma. Cole will be pursuing a degree in the fine arts at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art)
Gold Key winners and their teachers are invited to attend the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 6th. Cole's work will also be displayed with the other gold key recipients in New York at the National Exhibition.

Third-grade students at Boulevard have been designing buildings or fantasy homes! They used their creativity and knowledge of the elements of art to draw their ideas. The students used watercolor paints or pencils to add color! High school Ceramics students will choose a 3rd grade artwork to inspire one of their three-dimensional pieces! The 3D artworks will be displayed at Boulevard's Spring Art Show with the 3rd grade artist's inspirational piece!
