Wrestling is great conditioning for soccer and soccer is great conditioning for wrestling.

Here's a great reminder for everyone heading into the state series.

Coach Cael Sanderson's Coaching Code.
The core tenets behind the most dominant dynasty in college wrestling.

Focus on Effort, Not Outcome
“Winning and losing doesn’t define you. How you compete does.” Sanderson learned from his father that effort — not results — is what builds character and consistency.

Compete Without ‘Inhaling’
Whether it’s junk food, toxic media, or praise from fans — his athletes are taught to filter what they take in. “What you feed your body and your mind matters.”

Pressure Is a Privilege
Sanderson doesn’t shield athletes from pressure — he prepares them for it. “If there wasn’t a lot at stake, why would we even do this?”

Lead Without Ego
Cael rarely raises his voice. He doesn’t chase the spotlight. Instead, he leads with calm, humility, and faith. “You either choose to be humble, or you’re compelled to be.”

Wrestle with Purpose
The goal isn’t just to win — it’s to grow. “What makes you great on the mat — discipline, selflessness, consistency — makes you better in life.”

No Shortcuts
Every inch is earned. “You can take shortcuts and be good. But if you want to be the best, there’s no room for that here.”

Keep Perspective
Win or lose, life keeps going. “Sometimes not winning is the greater blessing. You just don’t see it yet.”

This year’s Super Bowl has more wrestling on the field than most people realize.

AJ Barner, Ty Okada, Brandon Pili, Christian Haynes, Robbie Ouzts, and Kenneth Walker III all wrestled before football became their main path. Not as conditioning. Not for fun. Wrestling was part of how they learned to move, balance, and compete.

That matters.

Football is a leverage sport pretending to be a speed sport. Every snap is hand fighting. Every block is a battle for inside control. Every tackle is about balance, angles, and finishing another human who doesn’t want to go down. Wrestling trains those exact skills early and relentlessly.

Wrestling teaches how to stay functional when tired. How to control bodies in chaos. How to think while under pressure. Those qualities don’t show up on a stat sheet, but they show up every Sunday.

That’s why wrestlers keep making NFL rosters.
And that’s why they keep showing up on the biggest stage in football.

You don’t have to like wrestling.
But football keeps proving it works.
