AVTEC’s Alaska Maritime Training Center welcomed a special group of visitors this week from the ARM Cuauhtémoc (“kwow-TEH-mohk”), a Mexican Navy tall ship used to train naval cadets in hands-on navigation and seamanship. The ship was visiting Seward as part of its Pacífico Norte 2026 training voyage, marking its third visit to the community since 2005.

Our maritime instructors were pleased to host a group of Cuauhtémoc cadets for an overview of AVTEC’s maritime training programs, including an interactive tour of our three full-mission bridge simulators. The cadets were then handed the controls, navigating simulated vessels and interacting with other bridge crews in a shared virtual environment.

Built in Seward and bound for the Kuskokwim!

Constructed by AVTEC’s Construction Technology students, this tiny house is en route by barge to Kwethluk, where it will provide much-needed housing for educators in the community. The sections pictured on the barge will be joined together on site to form a single home.

The project also brought in students from AVTEC’s Industrial Electric and Plumbing and Heating programs, who completed the home’s electrical wiring and plumbing systems.

The home is part of a partnership formed with the Lower Kuskokwim School District in 2024, giving AVTEC students the opportunity to apply their training while addressing a practical need in rural Alaska and demonstrating how partnerships can expand AVTEC’s role from workforce preparation to direct community support.

Dormitory Attendants help support AVTEC students and residents by providing assistance, orienting new students, enforcing dormitory rules, and performing light housekeeping.

Pay: $22.81/hour

We are very excited to have received an amazing $250,000 donation from Wells Fargo to help us breakdown some financial barriers for potential students. Check out this great article about the event and stay tuned for more information to come as this scholarship takes shape.

AVTEC Director Cory Ortiz said the donation will help AVTEC remove obstacles that prevent prospective students from entering or completing vocational programs.
