Dear Students,

We have learned that fraudulent emails targeting students have been sent seemingly to offer potential research work or other job opportunities at the University. These scam emails usually have a [External] tag in the subject line, indicating they did not originate within the University. The emails suggest they are from University faculty or staff, but, upon closer examination, the email address is not an .edu address.

The messages may ask you to call or text a number to apply for a job. They will use these communication methods to continue the conversation with you and then ask you to send them money, gift cards, bank account, or credit/debit card information. They may also try to get personal information such as your name, email address, or department of study, sometimes through online forms.

These kinds of messages are considered phishing emails. These are scammers who are trying to steal money or personal information from you.

Never reply to these types of emails or offer any personal information, and never call or text the number listed. If you are uncertain if an email you receive is legitimate, please reach out to Sewanee's Help Desk first for clarification.
