Sewanee alumni: What did you do to earn spending money while you were a student? Lead campus tours? Wait tables? Work the library desk? Make lattes at Stirling’s? Something more unusual? For an upcoming piece in Sewanee magazine, we want to hear the story behind your student job. The stranger, funnier, more memorable or more unexpected the better. What was the job—and what happened? Send your story in 150 words or fewer to [email protected]. We’re betting there are some good ones out there.

Many thanks to all the great local businesses and organizations who helped welcome new students to the community at Tigerfest 2026! From food and games to live music and giveaways, it was a night of fun and a great introduction to all that the Mountain has to offer.

Remembering Dolly Parton with a little music from our Tennessee mountain home, where “9 to 5” rang out on the carillon on Wednesday afternoon.

Say cheese, Class of 2030! Tuesday’s class photo brought out plenty of smiles and marked one more milestone for a class that’s already making the Mountain its own. Here’s to four years of plenty more reasons to smile.

For the first time, every first-year student is participating in Sewanee’s First Year Experience, giving them opportunities to build relationships, explore the Domain, engage in interdisciplinary learning, and begin thinking about the kind of Sewanee experience they want to create.

What did we find students doing when we tagged along with some of the Explore track groups? We found the Rooted and Grounded group touring Shapard Tower and the carillon. We found the Domain Connections group harvesting herbs at the University Farm. We found the Breathe, Move, Grow group enjoying a crafternoon at the Wellness Commons. We found the Sewanee Soundscapes group creating homemade instruments to play in a concert for local families. We found the Higher Calling group taking flight at the airport. We found one of many Sewanee Outing Program PRE groups climbing at Morgan’s Steep. We found the Learn, Serve, Grow group landscaping at the Sewanee Senior Center. We found the Roberson Project group restoring headstones in the historically Black section of the University Cemetery. And then we found them all at a contra dance on the rugby field on Saturday night.

This is just a small sampling of what’s been happening on and off campus over the last few days. There are countless more stories, experiences, discoveries, and new connections unfolding every day as Sewanee’s newest students begin making the Mountain their own.

Sewanee is No. 1 for getting outdoors! The Princeton Review has just named Sewanee the No. 1 college in the nation in its inaugural “Great Outdoors: Students Get Outside” ranking. The recognition highlights the extraordinary ways students engage with the 13,000-acre Domain—from one of the nation’s most active collegiate outdoor programs to environmental research, sustainability initiatives, and exploration of the natural world. And the accolades don’t stop there: Sewanee also earned the No. 2 spot on The Princeton Review’s "Most Beautiful Campus" list. We are saddened to share the news of the death of Albert S. “Al” Gooch Jr., whose warmth, energy, and gift for invitation shaped Sewanee for generations. As director of admission for more than 20 years, Gooch welcomed students to the Mountain with enthusiasm and care, becoming a mentor and friend to so many. His love for Sewanee extended into every corner of campus life, including his early leadership with the Friends of Abbo’s Alley. He carried that same spirit to Kanuga, where he served as president from 1983 to 2005, guiding the conference center through a period of growth and helping create the vibrant, welcoming community it remains today. We give thanks for his life, his generous spirit, and the many lives he touched at Sewanee, Kanuga, and beyond.

Did you know the inspiration for the hit novel Theo of Golden is a Sewanee alum? Garry Pound, C’77—an artist based in Columbus, Georgia—helped inspire the artist at the center of Allen Levi’s bestselling novel. In it, an 86-year-old stranger arrives in a small town and quietly begins buying portraits of its residents, sparking conversations that ultimately bring healing and connection. In this clip from the Oprah Podcast, Levi reflects on Pound’s art and the story behind the story.
