Dr. Walter Merrill, a wonderful and engaged Sewanee alum that serves on our Pre-Health Advisory Board and mentors our V-SURE (https://medschool.vanderbilt.edu/vssa/vanderbilt-sewanee-undergraduate-research-experience/) interns, talks with Dr. Bill Frist about his time as a transplant surgeon at Vanderbilt. We are lucky to have Dr. Merrill involved with our program.

“I’ll be there.”

Every time I called Dr. Walter Merrill about a transplant, no matter the hour, that was his answer. No hesitation. No questions.

In the early years of Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s heart and lung transplant program, I would fly with our procurement team to recover a donor organ. Walter would be back in Nashville, preparing our patient in the operating room. Every hour mattered, and we depended on one another.

Walter performed Vanderbilt’s first adult heart transplant in 1985. In January 1987, we performed Tennessee’s first heart-lung transplant together. He became my indispensable partner as we worked alongside an extraordinary team to give patients a chance at life that medicine could not previously offer.

On November 30, Walter and I will share some of that history at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine's Elizabeth Simpson Lecture. It was great to catch up with him earlier this week in preparation for our talk.

Looking forward to reflecting on the patients, donor families, nurses, and colleagues who made those early years possible, and sharing what they taught us with the next generation of doctors.

The Hippocrates Fellows Program is designed for pre-medical students who are eager to grow academically and professionally. The program provides students with opportunities to explore their interests in healthcare, connect with mentors and peers, and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to pursue a career in medicine. By fostering intellectual curiosity, leadership, and a commitment to service, the Hippocrates Fellows Program supports students as they prepare for the next steps in their academic and professional journeys.

We are excited to welcome our newest cohort of first-year Fellows and welcome back our sophomore and junior cohorts. We look forward to supporting each of you as you grow as scholars, leaders, and future physicians.
