Our School
Severn School is an independent, coeducational, nonprofit, college preparatory day school serving a diverse student population in grades preschool through twelve. The entrance and graduation requirements, the curriculum and programs, the selection of faculty and staff, and the financial operations are based upon the school's stated philosophy and mission. The Severn School community of

students, parents, trustees, alumni and friends supports these purposes. Philosophy
Severn School believes in educating the whole person in a student-centered, supportive educational community that values the dignity, self worth, and potential of each individual. Mission
Severn School challenges its students to pursue excellence in character, conduct, and scholarship, to marshal the courage to lead, and to develop the lasting desire to serve and achieve. We believe this is best realized in a community where adults model these qualities and where each student is known and valued. Follow us! Twitter: twitter.com/SevernSchool

The final Van Eney ’09 Fellows project we proudly highlight is titled "Wildlife Journal: Exploring Maryland’s Native Species", by Char Wilkin. This creative project combined three different perspectives -- that of a biologist, an artist, and a writer -- in order to establish a connection with and appreciation for 15 native Maryland species that are crucial to the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. The journal includes hand drawn illustrations of the species typical of a nature guide.

Through the Van Eney ’09 Fellows Program, seniors at Severn School have the opportunity to pursue a year-long passion project that reflects their growing personal and intellectual interests. Congratulations to rising seniors Trevor McNemar and Connor Merchant on their selection as Boys State citizens. They completed this prestigious weeks-long leadership and civics program earlier this summer, where they had the opportunity to run mock governments and engage in civic leadership. Since 1935, American Legion Boys State and Boys Nation have offered top high school juniors a unique, hands-on experience in how government works.

Lizzie Veiel’s Fellows Project, titled "Portraits of a Purpose: Honoring Educators who Inspire", was designed to honor highly impactful and devoted faculty members in Severn School’s history. Lizzie surveyed alumni and requested nominations of previous and retired faculty members who had a significant, positive influence on student life at Severn and beyond. The goal was to identify five faculty members and set up meetings to discuss their personal experience at Severn school and with their students. Lizzie then painted a portrait of each faculty member, which she displayed along with a brief biography and a meaningful quote from the subject.
