AP Environmental Science students recently spent the day at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Philip Merrill Center, exploring the connections between land use, water quality, and healthy aquatic ecosystems. While canoeing on Black Walnut Creek, students conducted water quality tests and examined how nearby land use can support or threaten the health of the creek. They also toured the Philip Merrill Center, learning how the sustainable design features of this LEED Platinum building help reduce its environmental impact.

That's a wrap on Upper School Spirit Week! Class Color Day closed out the week, and each class decorated one hallway to match their theme for the week. Big shoutout to the Fairytale Freshmen, Spinback Sophomores, Jet-Set Juniors, and Senior State of Mind for all the creativity. The annual Sing for Your Supper and Tug of War contests did not disappoint and are always a great way to end the day.

It’s fitting that today is also World Smile Day, because the way the Upper School community came together this week to contribute to the annual SPAN Food Drive gives everyone a reason to smile. Let's keep this energy going into Homecoming tomorrow.

Through the support of Severn parents, alumni, friends, and community in reaching our $25.5 million Our Future, Our Severn: A Promise campaign goal, Severn School proudly opened the George ‘49 and Barbara Cromwell Lower School for the 2026-27 academic year. The naming of the building recognizes a transformative gift given to the school by Mrs. Barbara Cromwell in honor of her husband George, Severn class of 1949, and her own legacy as an educator.

The opening of the building also represents the fulfillment of a promise made when Severn became a Preschool through 12th grade school in 2013 in our merger with Chesapeake Academy – to invest in people, programs, and facilities where our mission can flourish.

We are grateful for the support of so many, and proudly share a timeline video of the campaign, building of a new campus, and the fulfillment of our promise to each other.

New this year, Severn is offering two arts-focused admission events for students applying for grades 9-11: an Improv Workshop on Oct. 21 and an Invited Dress Rehearsal on Nov. 18. To learn more and register, visit https://www.severnschool.com/open-house

Improv Workshop: Prospective Upper School students are invited to join Dr. Patterson and members of the Severn School Improv Club for an hour of games, laughter, and collaboration. Learn core principles of improv comedy including “yes and…”, accepting offers, and the “cop in the head” in a fun, relaxed, and creative environment, and hear more about the many amazing opportunities in the Upper School Theatre Program at Severn School!

Invited Dress Rehearsal: On the evening of November 18, the Water Street Players, Severn’s student theatre group, will hold its final dress rehearsal for the fall production of She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen. Prospective Upper School students and parents are invited to attend this final dress rehearsal – where anything can, and often does, go wrong – and then stay to talk with the cast and crew at the end.
