I wish every mom & dad with an infant or toddler knew this tip! I call it, “Go with the GIGGLES™️”!
Why do I love it as a Speech Therapist for 20+ years?Simply put: Giggles often motivate children to *want* to continue something—which opens the door for communication to happen.
Said another way, when we are intrinsically motivated to do something— communicating that we want *more* of it becomes effortless!
If you’d like to try this out yourself, let me break it down for you:
Steps:
1-Find the giggle
2-Use a simple word and gesture to describe it (up, tickle, fly, etc)
3- When the giggles happen—pause. Look at your child. Connect with them.
4- Then offer to continue the fun, keeping those giggles going, by modeling a word and gesture.
5- Be excited and have fun, but also have NO expectations
6- If your child doesn’t respond with a sound, word or gesture this time, that’s ok. You’re bonding and enjoying each other—which alone is priceless. 💕
Remember:
Toddlerhood is all about FUN! 🤩 My invitation for you: Help create memories of good times and sounds of giggles. You’ll all likely be happier for it! 💕
