🎃🍂 A Beautiful October Day at the Garoutte Family Farm

Oh, what a wonderful day we had!

This morning, our little mountain school headed down to Burns for a fall adventure at the Garoutte Family Farm. The sun was shining, the autumn air was beautiful, and there was so much to explore!

There was a maze to wander through, pumpkins to choose, goats to feed, and all sorts of wonderful places to climb, crawl, play, and discover. We enjoyed popcorn and apple c***r, shared lunch around the picnic tables, and soaked up every bit of that gorgeous October day.

Even the bus ride was part of the fun as we listened to The Best Halloween Ever, a story that carried us all the way to Burns and back again.

I found myself thinking about how much children need days like this. Time outdoors. Time to explore. Time to laugh with friends, try something new, and just enjoy being children.

There is something so special about these simple experiences. A pumpkin chosen all by yourself. A curious goat eating from your hand. The excitement of finding your way through a maze. Little moments that become wonderful childhood memories.

A heartfelt thank-you to the Garoutte family for sharing their farm with us and making our day so special.

🍂🎃 From Mountain Roads to Pumpkin Patches! 🎃🍂

There’s a little fall magic in the air at Seneca Elementary!

On Monday, our little mountain school will head down from beautiful Bear Valley to Burns for a pumpkin-picking adventure, complete with the sights, sounds, and traditions of autumn.

And the learning begins before we even arrive!

Our bus ride will become a traveling storytime as we listen to The Best Halloween Ever by Barbara Robinson, practicing listening, predicting, and thinking about the choices characters make.

These photos are a little glimpse of autumn fun from a previous year, when pumpkins even became part of our classroom building adventures!

We can’t wait to see what memories Monday brings. 🍁

🍂 A Little Autumn Magic at Seneca Elementary 🎃

There’s a little autumn magic finding its way into the corners of our little mountain school!

A few glowing leaves, smiling jack-o’-lanterns, a mischievous gnome, and a tiny scarecrow keeping watch over our classroom.

Simple little touches, really. But sometimes it’s the smallest things that make a school feel like home.

At Seneca Elementary, we believe childhood should be filled with curiosity, discovery, laughter, and a sense of belonging. Whether we’re exploring the forest, learning something new, or celebrating the changing seasons, we’re creating memories that go far beyond the classroom.

And speaking of autumn magic… 🍁

Monday, we’re taking our learning on the road! Our students are headed to a farm near Burns for a pumpkin patch adventure, where they’ll each get to choose their very own pumpkin and enjoy a little fall fun together.

From glowing classroom pumpkins to picking real ones in the patch, we’re embracing all the wonderful little moments that make this season special.

🏔️❤️ Small Schools. Big Connections. BIG Possibilities!

Something pretty COOL is happening in rural Oregon! 🌟

Next week, Seneca Elementary students will join students from other small rural schools across Oregon for our first Rural COOL-laborators gathering of the school year!

From Adel and Fields to Frenchglen, Drewsey, Juntura, Troy, Imnaha, Joseph, and beyond, students from some of Oregon’s smallest communities will come together through technology to learn, laugh, connect, and discover that great things happen when we work together.

But the magic of Rural COOL-laborators begins long before our students log in.

Each week, a dedicated group of rural educators meets to share ideas, strengthen math instruction, explore mathematical fluency, and find creative ways to bring meaningful learning opportunities to our students. We may teach in different communities, sometimes separated by hundreds of miles, but we share a common belief: Every child deserves rich learning experiences, no matter how small or remote their school may be.

During our virtual gatherings, students will get to know one another, learn about each other’s schools and communities, and explore mathematical thinking through puzzles, problem-solving, and collaborative challenges. They’ll work with students in similar grade levels, share strategies, listen to different perspectives, and discover that there is often more than one way to solve a problem.

And perhaps the most beautiful part? They’re building friendships and connections with children who understand what it’s like to grow up in a small rural community.

Our connections will continue throughout the year, including an exciting opportunity to gather in person with some of our rural school friends for an opera experience in Fields this February! 🎶

At Seneca Elementary, we believe our small size is one of our greatest strengths. It allows us to build relationships, think creatively, and create opportunities that reach far beyond our classroom walls.

Small schools don’t have to mean small opportunities. Sometimes, the smallest schools make the biggest connections. ❤️

Fresh air, a forest trail, and time to notice the little things. 🌲🍂

This afternoon, Forest School took us to the SWICK Old Growth Forest, where we split into two groups for movement, exploration, and art.

With Mrs. Raymond, students ran the trail for PE and took a closer look at leaves for a little forest science. With Mrs. Durych, paper and crayons became tools for discovering textures. Students made rubbings of leaves, tree rings on cut logs, pine needles, rocks, and even the knots in the picnic tables. There was always another surface to try and another pattern to discover!

One of my favorite parts was seeing the children settle into cozy spots in the forest, busy with their paper and crayons, paying attention to details they might otherwise have walked right past.

Science, art, PE, and language arts all found a place in our afternoon. We observed and compared, explored patterns, talked about words and sentences, and labeled some of our discoveries on paper. Sharing the space and materials gave us practice in cooperation, while spending time in the woods helped us build a closer connection to the place we call home.

There is something wonderful about giving children time to move, create, and follow their curiosity outdoors. Today, a leaf, a log, or an ordinary rock was enough to get us looking a little closer. ❤️

Nine kids, three adults, one hour of work—and $240 for our PTA! ♻️

Today’s social studies lesson was a hands-on lesson in taking care of our community. Our recycling trailer has been filling up, so students, staff, and family helpers teamed up to tackle the cans and bottles. Recycling takes time, and a few drippy, sticky cans made it a little messy, but the kids were excited to help and see how much we could accomplish together.

We brought in five bags of cans and two bags of bottles today! The money will help our PTA provide fun activities and experiences for our students.

Along the way, we practiced sharing jobs, cooperating, helping one another, and sticking with a task—even when it wasn’t the cleanest one! We also made a real connection between caring for the environment, contributing to our community, and working toward a shared goal.

Thank you to everyone who pitched in and everyone who adds cans and bottles to our trailer. There’s still more to do, so another recycling work bee is in our future. These Seneca kids can be proud of what they accomplished today! ❤️

So Much Learning in a Little Paintbrush 🎨

Monday brought social-emotional learning, art, and plenty of bright color to Seneca! These pictures capture the paintings taking shape, but there is so much happening behind each brushstroke.

* Art is expression. A way to share feelings and ideas that children may not yet have words for.
* Art is science. Mixing colors, experimenting, and discovering what happens when we try something new.
* Art is coordination. Hands and eyes working together as children guide a brush and practice small, careful movements.
* Art is spatial thinking. Exploring shapes, sizes, placement, and how things fit together on a page.
* Art is problem-solving. “How can I make that color?” “What could I try next?”
* Art is perseverance. Working through frustration and discovering that an unexpected mark can become part of the picture.
* Art is decision-making. Choosing colors, tools, and details—and making something that is your own.
* Art is connection. Sharing materials, exchanging ideas, and appreciating someone else’s way of seeing the world.
* Art is a chance to slow down. Time to settle into a process, focus, and enjoy creating.
* Art is confidence. That wonderful moment of being able to say, “I made this!”

And art is joy. There is something worth protecting in giving children the time and space to imagine, explore, and create. I love seeing their individual personalities come through in their work—and getting to share that little glimpse of their world with you.
