Two students are already signed up for our December OPU course in Senatobia, MS. We need just one more to run the class on these dates.

Why vets and producers are adding OPU:
✅ Any heifer or cow can be a donor, including heifers from about 10 months old and pregnant cows up to day 100–120
✅ Collect every two weeks with no hormone stimulation, and use a different bull each time
✅ Cows that have failed at conventional flushing are often good IVF candidates

2.5 days of advanced, hands-on training, limited to 4 students so you get plenty of time in the cows at the chutes and in the lab. You'll learn ultrasound-guided o***y mapping and aspiration, positioning the o***y, searching and grading oocytes for the IVF lab, and setting up and troubleshooting your OPU equipment.

"Artificial insemination certification online" is one of the most common searches in this business, so here's a straight answer instead of a sales pitch.

You can learn a great deal about cattle AI online. You cannot learn to do it online.

Anatomy, the estrous cycle, synchronization protocols, semen handling and tank management all travel fine through a screen - and plenty of conception failures are thaw and tank failures, not technique failures. But AI is a blind procedure done by feel. Nobody can show you on video what a cervix feels like under your fingers, and a video can't tell you when you're wrong.

Here's the test: extension services at Cornell, Purdue, Wisconsin and NC State all run AI schools. Some do the lectures over Zoom. Not one of them stops there. If a fully online course could produce a competent technician, a hundred extension programs would have quit hauling students to farms years ago.

There's no worse sound on preg-check day than the vet saying "open" three times in a row.

A few opens are normal - they put some selection pressure on fertility. But past roughly 6-10% in a defined 60-90 day season, it stops being attrition and starts being a problem worth diagnosing.

The trouble is that preg-check is an autopsy. Whatever went wrong happened months ago.

The eight usual suspects: she was thin at CALVING (the biggest one by far, and the direction she's headed matters as much as the score), she calved too late last year, she was a first-calf heifer, the bull failed, heat and fescue, something infectious, missed heats, or semen handling and technique.

One tip that does most of the work: note WHICH cows are open. Late calvers? First-calf heifers? One bull's group? One pasture? A scattered handful is normal. A cluster is a diagnosis.

Trump signed it Friday. Ranchers will "process their own food," he said. We read all four sections of the executive order so you don't have to.

What it does: turns up Packers & Stockyards enforcement, pushes interstate sales through state inspection, funds small plants, and orders USDA to list every law standing in the way within 60 days.

What it does not do: let anyone sell uninspected meat, break up the big four, or come with money attached.

6.5 days · No prior experience required. Start from zero and leave able to breed your own cows AND flush and transfer embryos — everything in one trip.

🔬 COMPREHENSIVE BOVINE EMBRYO TRANSFER (ET) — November 2 to 6
4.5 days · For students who are already competent at artificial insemination. Learn to superovulate, flush and transfer in your own herd. Veterinarians and veterinary technicians earn 50 hours of RACE-approved CE credit on this course.

Both classes are capped at 8 students, so everyone gets hands-on time with live cattle. Multiply the genetics of your best donor cows, produce higher-value calves and accelerate herd improvement — and in some states, offer ET as a service (the rules vary by state, so check yours).

Friday morning the President announced that for 90 days the U.S. will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to come in with no out-of-quota tariff. Live and feeder futures gapped lower on the open, hit eight- to nine-month lows, and finished the week sharply down.

A few things worth knowing before you react to it:

It's lean beef trimmings, not beef generally - which means it competes most directly with your CULL COWS, not your fed steers.

The executive order hasn't been signed yet. The White House said it's coming within two weeks. The details left out of the announcement are the ones that determine the real effect.

And economists broadly expect the effect on retail hamburger prices to be small. Ground beef is near $7/lb because the herd is the smallest in about 70 years, and 90 days of trimmings doesn't change that.

The same morning, Cattle on Feed showed July placements down 11% - the lowest for the month since the series began in 1996. Supply is still tight.

Fall calvers are getting the calving pasture ready. Spring calvers just weaned. And every August somebody asks the same question: am I calving at the right time of year?

University of Tennessee researchers ran the numbers on nearly two decades of data and found fall calving was the most profitable option for Southeastern producers - and the least risky. But here is the part that gets lost in the argument: for most herds, the LENGTH of your calving window matters more than the month it starts.
