From the shop to Semmes Heritage Day!

Our ag students have been busy putting their hands to work this week! They’ve been building birdhouses, bird feeders, and pumpkins in class—and now their hard work is headed out into the community!

We’re excited to have these student-made creations available for purchase tomorrow at the City of Semmes Heritage Day!

Come see what our students have been building, support our ag program, and maybe take home something special for your yard!

🏆 THE GREAT PANSY PLANTING CHALLENGE — PART 3 🏆

The friendly little competition officially became student vs. stopwatch today!

Two students decided they wanted to be timed while transplanting their own flats of pansies.

And this installment proves that they might just have given their teacher a little something to worry about.

These girls might just give Ms. Dent a run for her money before long!

No grades. No prizes. Just hands-on practice, friendly competition, and some serious bragging rights. 😂

⏱️ THE GREAT PANSY PLANTING CHALLENGE — PART 2 ⏱️

After witnessing the 3rd period showdown, 4th period decided they needed to get involved. 😂

MGM Academy of Agribusiness students made their predictions about how long it would take Ms. Dent to transplant a flat of pansies…

Then they put her to the clock. ⏱️🌱

Apparently, transplanting pansies is now a timed event at Viking Horticulture.

But the students weren’t finished yet…

Two of the girls decided they wanted to see how they would do against the clock.

And that brings us to Part 3…

🌸🏆 THE GREAT PANSY PLANTING CHALLENGE — PART 1 🏆🌸

It started in 3rd period when one of the MGM Academy of Agribusiness second-year students looked at Ms. Dent and basically said, “I can transplant a flat of pansies faster than you.”👀

Well… there was only one way to settle this.

They raced.

And let’s just say… he did not beat Ms. Dent. 😂😂😂

No grades. No prizes. Just bragging rights and apparently Ms. Dent now has a reputation to defend.

.:.WEEK 3 In Viking Ag.:.

Week 3 was BUSY in Viking Ag! We’re growing plants, learning about equipment, serving our community, and making sure these kids know how to drive a tractor.

Wednesday: We unboxed approximately 15,000 baby plants for our Fall Plant Sale. That’s a LOT of tiny plants!

Thursday: We learned about cell packs and containers for our Fall crops, filled flats, and started sowing vegetable seeds. The greenhouse is officially getting busy!

We also started learning the basics of tractor operation…because ag education should probably include knowing what to do when someone hands you the keys to a tractor.

Friday: Our seniors worked on a special service-learning project—the construction of a Little Library to donate to one of our feeder-pattern elementary schools.

Plants. Tractors. Tools. Service. Hard work.

Just another week in Viking Ag.

We just unpacked approximately 15,000 baby plants for our Fall Plant Sale, and suddenly the greenhouses feel a whole lot smaller. And this is just the ornamental/flowering plants! Shoutout to Park Seed Wholesale for helping us with our Fall plants!

This is where the real work begins! Over the next few weeks, our students will be learning, planting, watering, fertilizing, troubleshooting, growing, and probably talking to plants like they’re members of the family. It’s a LOT of plants. A LOT of work. And a LOT of learning.

But watching our students take tiny plants and turn them into something beautiful that our community can enjoy? That’s the good stuff.

There’s always work to be done in agriculture, especially when Mother Nature decides to add to the to-do list.

After yesterday’s storm blew branches and limbs out of the trees around school, our MGM Academy of Agribusiness students got to work picking up the aftermath.

It may not be glamorous, but this is part of learning, too. Showing up, working together, taking care of the place you’ve been given, and not being afraid to get a little dirty in the process.

Proud of these students for seeing what needed to be done and getting after it. Hard work is still one of the best teachers.

There’s always work to be done in agriculture, especially when Mother Nature decides to add to the to-do list.

MGM Academy of Agribusiness students are already proving that they’re not afraid to learn something new, or put in some hard work while they’re at it!

Last week was all about SAFETY, and we’re incredibly proud to say 100% of our students scored 100% on their safety test!

Now we’re putting that knowledge into practice. This week, our ag students have been hard at work cleaning up the greenhouses, learning how to safely operate string trimmers, getting familiar with different tools, and tackling the not-so-glamorous work of getting our growing spaces back into shape.

There’s a lot more to agriculture than planting a seed. Sometimes you have to learn the tool, learn the skill, get a little dirty, and put in the work.

And that’s exactly what we’re doing. Learning new things. Building new skills. Not afraid of hard work.

That’s how we grow.
