School of Discovery

School of Discovery The School of Discovery serves all fifth and sixth grade students within the Selma City Schools district.

The School of Discovery Genesis Center (SOD) serves students by providing them with a full array of learning experiences. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to cultivating the full potential of each child through numerous approaches to teaching and learning. SOD's comprehensive curriculum is designed to promote the individual and collective growth of all learners. Our approach to success involves

meeting learners where they are and collaboratively working together to assist each person in reaching their full potential academically and socially. In addition to the core academic areas of Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science, our students are exposed to skills associated with computer technology, vocal music, art, law and order, dance, banking, and robotics. "Gifted" and "Talent Search" programs are offered in conjunction with mentoring programs that are incorporated by various fraternities and sororities.

Week 1 was so full of excitement that we had to make a Part 2!

Discovery Collaboration Time
We officially kicked off our weekly PLCs, which we’ve named Discovery Collaboration Time. Our teachers and math coach did an amazing job unpacking standards and creating common formative assessment items to guide our focus for upcoming lessons. It was a powerful start to our collaborative planning!

STEAM Fridays are here!
The highlight of our week was launching our first STEAM Friday. We are honored to have 15 community partners committed to teaching our scholars every Friday for the next 9 weeks:

* Cooking: Tuskegee University Teen Cuisine (Ms. H. Williams)
* Academics, Arts & Athletics: Triple A+ Academy (Ms. Angela Benjamin)
* Selma History: Selma Heritage (Dr. Verdell Dawson & committee)

Celebrations & Expectations
During our assembly, our admin team set the stage for a year of excellence by outlining student expectations, and we took a moment to celebrate Assistant Principal Walker on his Master’s graduation from the University of West Alabama! We also treated our hardworking faculty and staff to a popcorn bar to celebrate "popping" into a new school year.

Week 1 was clearly amazing, and we are looking forward to even greater things ahead.
