4-H and Youth Developme

nt - includes organizing community and school 4-H clubs, leadership training for teens and adults, learning life skills, animal and pet care and more than 50 project areas. Agriculture - includes commercial nursery production ad marketing, fruit and vegetable production and marketing, pesticide training, education for small farm owners, and agribusiness management. Horticulture - includes topics for both residents and professionals like landscape design installation and maintenance, plant selection and placement,sustainable irrigation practices, and sustainable management practices and the popular Master Gardener program. Family and Consumer Topics - including family and parenting, child development, money management, food safety, nutrition education, disaster preparation, and energy conservation. Natural Resource Management - includes, urban forestry, wildlife management, and master naturalist training among others.

Florida native milkweed is loving these summer rains and blooming beautifully! 🌺 Pictured here is the pink swamp milkweed, Asclepias incarnata, which likes sun and wet soil conditions. There are generally available at native plant nurseries and also aren’t hard to grow from seed.

According to the US Drought Monitor even with the recent rains Hillsborough County is still in a D3 (Extreme Drought). Irrigation is meant to be supplemental to rainfall and should be used only as needed.

Root knot nematodes 🪱 are a silent killer. They are microscopic roundworms with needle like mouthparts that pierce into plant roots. Plants respond with abnormal growth such as galls on their roots. This reduces nutrient uptake and plant vigor. Next time you pull up your plant (tomato root 🍅 pictured here) check for nematode damage.
