Bippity boppity bow drill 🔥

This is the most confident I've ever felt busting a coal. The second I bowed out my starter coal, I knew it was going to be a success. My bow string felt just tight enough. The spindle was excellent. Carving my notch was perfect (for me). Everything just lined up.

We like to say practice makes permanent. If you want to get good at something hard, make it a part of your daily life. Make it a ritual.

Would you take a 30 day bow drill challenge?

Doesn't mean you have to bust a coal every single day for 30 days - just practice one of the 8 core skills of bow drill for at least 15 minutes every day.

That means you could:

🔥Harvest a nice stick to make your bow
🔥Chop up a fireboard from a seasoned log
🔥Carve a few spindles
🔥Find or create a sweet top rock (or antler)
🔥Practice tying and tightening your bow string
🔥Bow out a bunch of starter holes
🔥Carve notches in your fireboard
🔥Attempt or succeed in busting a coal
🔥Blowing a tinder bundle into flame
🔥Introducing a tinder bundle into a fire structure
🔥Testing out novel tinders and coal extenders
🔥Making a bow drill kit from all wild wood

Who's in? Tag if you're down to clown and practice bow drill every day for 30 days.

We had so much fun teaching our mushroom log cultivation class on Saturday!

Our participants learned how to identify PNW tree species with mushroom affiliations, plug mushroom spawn from North Spore Mushrooms and care for their inoculated log at home.

Wanna grow your own mushrooms at home?

The fabulous Tyee Arts and Education Center at Honeychurch Antiques was the perfect venue for a sunny weekend workshop. Matt and I always love teaching here! Our February friction fire and ethnobotany workshops will be there, too!
