The holidays can make grief and loss feel like the heaviest of blankets. The feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness may smother you. However, the holidays can also provide an abundance of hope. The holidays can be a time of self-compassion and grace.

Self-compassion means giving yourself the same kindness and care you would provide a good friend.

It can feel counterintuitive to take that pause when we live in a world that pressures us to keep moving, achieving, and climbing. However, when a person fails to take care of their own body and mind, it’s only harmful to themselves and everyone around them.

It’s healthy and vital to press pause, take a break and participate in self-care. Extending compassion to yourself is essential.

How are you taking care of yourself this week?

Join as Geshe Michael Roach reads some of his favorite excerpts from his new book, Katrin over three reading sessions on Aug 7, 22, and 26. The last two readings overlap his live teaching of the Yoga Sutra Chapter 4, which is the focal point of this book’s sequel How Yoga Works.

Book description: From the author of How Yoga Works, a delightful adventure tale of yoga and the ancient wisdom behind it. Friday is a young girl who lives in a tiny nomad village high in the Himalayan plains, a thousand years before our time. Yoga is just starting to reach Tibet from India, and is strictly forbidden for women. In fact, so are books—and learning to read or to write.
Friday’s uncle Jampa is a quiet, wise Buddhist monk who gives classes to young monks who walk from the local monastery to his beautiful yurt, secluded within the mountains. Why does he live so alone? Why doesn’t he stay with the other monks? Uncle has a secret.

Friday grows up watching Uncle teach her dear brother Tenzing the deepest knowledge of the ancient books, as he trains to become a Geshe, or Master. She secretly watches the Wisdom Warriors of the monastery at night, as they tear apart beautiful ideas, leaping in the wild dance of a debater monk.
Friday hatches a daring plan to become the first woman in a thousand years to break into this secret society of wisdom and yoga. How could it ever come true? Will she succeed?

We need to make the jump from mindfulness to emptiness.

If we understand where things are coming from, then we get a chance to really change our lives.
