But that doesn’t mean your purpose quits you.

Karl Mullings swore he would never touch a camera again.

Then he moved to Sedona, picked up a tiny Kodak EasyShare, started photographing the Red Rocks… and someone asked him for a headshot.

One photo became another.

And the thing he thought he had walked away from found him again.

Sometimes purpose isn’t the thing you choose.

It’s the thing that keeps following you until you finally say yes.

Karl Mullings’ mother saw the photographer in him long before he did.

Mentors saw it.

Clients saw it.

Even TLC saw it.

Karl still doubted it.

That may be one of the strangest parts of purpose: other people can sometimes recognize our gift years before we are willing to claim it ourselves.

Karl went from a kid with a camera and a box of flash cubes, to 15 years in the Marines, to quitting photography completely, to building a career around making people feel genuinely seen.

And maybe that is the deeper work.

Not becoming someone extraordinary.

Recognizing the thing you have quietly been doing all along.
