Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher and one of the most important figures in the development of Western philosophy. Born in Athens around 470 BCE, he dedicated his life to challenging assumptions, searching for truth, and encouraging people to examine their beliefs more carefully.
Unlike many philosophers of his era, Socrates left no writings of his own. Much of what is known about his ideas comes from the works of his students, especially Plato, who recorded many of his teachings and philosophical conversations.
Socrates became famous for what is now called the āSocratic Method,ā an approach that uses thoughtful questions and dialogue to encourage deeper understanding. Instead of presenting himself as someone who possessed every answer, he believed that genuine wisdom begins with recognizing how much we do not know.
His philosophy emphasized self-reflection, moral character, and the pursuit of truth rather than wealth, social status, or the approval of others. Socrates believed that living a meaningful life required integrity, reason, and a willingness to continually examine oneself.
Eventually, Socrates was sentenced to death after being convicted of impiety and corrupting the youth of Athens. Despite having the opportunity to escape, he remained committed to his principles and accepted his sentence. His ideas went on to profoundly influence philosophy, education, and critical thinking for centuries.
Today, Socrates is remembered for the enduring idea that wisdom is not simply having all the answers, but having the courage to question ourselves, seek the truth, and live according to virtue.
