The black-and-yellow garden spider is August's most misunderstood employee. She's big, she's dramatic, and that zigzag down the middle of her web looks like a warning sign — so every year, thousands of them get a broom instead of a thank-you.
Here's what she's actually doing: clearing your beds of grasshoppers, beetles, wasps, and mosquitoes, all night, every night, for zero dollars. She has no interest in you. Garden spiders almost never bite unless they're grabbed, and even then it's milder than a bee sting.
She'll take down more pests in a week than a bottle of spray — without touching a single pollinator that doesn't blunder into the web.
So if she's set up shop between the tomatoes, let her keep the lease. Walk around. She's earned it.

Six habits of the August gardener. No judgment here — the staring one is basically a daily practice at this point.
Tally yours from this week and drop the number. Anything above four means the garden owns you now, and honestly, it could have picked worse.

Before there were weather apps, there was your nose. And it's still right more often than you'd think.
Rain doesn't have one smell. It has two, and they arrive in order.
The first one is sharp and almost metallic — clean, like the air around a struck match. That's ozone. Lightning in a storm that may still be miles away splits the air apart and makes it, and the downdraft running out ahead of the storm carries it to you before a single drop does. Smell that on a summer evening and you have maybe twenty minutes.
The second is the earthy, sweet one everybody loves. That one is geosmin — made by bacteria living in your soil — thrown into the air as the first drops hit dry ground. There's a whole word for it: petrichor. And it means you're already too late to bring the cushions in.
Step out before bed tonight and take one deep breath. Metal or earth. The nose knows which one it is.

Jane Goodall had an affinity for T. S. Eliot’s poetry collection "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," which served as the direct source material and inspiration for Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1981 musical Cats. She was all smiles when she met (and fed!) the cast, and later requested for "Memory" to be played at her celebration of life, which was honored at her 2025 memorial at Washington, D.C.'s National Cathedral.
These anecdotes feel very Jane, who deeply loved all animals, not just chimpanzees, and adamantly believed that the best way to inspire action was through storytelling. “If one wants to change attitudes, you have to reach the heart," she would say. "You can reach the heart by telling stories."
On this , we at the Jane Goodall Institute are honored to carry forth Jane's legacy by telling stories, creating connections, and serving as a reminder that all animals are worthy of the utmost protection and care.
