From Switch Lab EV #16 to the first program in Alaska.

Our September 2026 Switch Lab EV Workshop brought together 5 teachers and 2 guests from 3 schools, including educators representing two very different chapters of the Switch Lab story.

GILA - Galena Interior Learning Academy is bringing the first Switch Lab EV program to Alaska, expanding hands-on electric vehicle education into a new state and giving students access to a complete project-based learning experience.

At the same workshop, Ron Willits from College of Marin joined us to train on one of our earliest programs, Switch Lab EV #16. Ron inherited the program from a previous instructor and came to build the knowledge needed to continue using it effectively with his students.

One program represents where we started. The other represents where the Switch Lab community continues to grow.

Automotive educators attending CATEA 2026 can join Switch Vehicles for a full-day, hands-on workshop focused on the Switch Lab EV.

Led by Chuck Kauffman and Keith Fisher, this session is designed to give instructors direct experience with the systems, wiring, components, and build process behind the Switch Lab EV. It is an opportunity to see how project-based training can be used to teach modern automotive electrical and EV concepts in the classroom.

New in the News!

Laramie County Community College is taking hands-on learning to the next level with a new Advanced Vehicle Electronics class launching this spring.

Students will start with a bare Switch Lab EV chassis and work together to build it into a functioning, road-ready vehicle. Along the way, they will gain experience with batteries, motors, wiring, electrical systems, diagnostics, and high-voltage safety.

For LCCC automotive instructor Robert Benning, one of the biggest goals is helping students become more confident around unfamiliar technology.

“Being around electric vehicles, for a lot of our students, they're just a mystery.”

By working through the systems themselves, students can move beyond that uncertainty and develop the confidence to diagnose, troubleshoot, and work safely in a professional environment.

The program is also about more than one vehicle. Caleb Perriton, LCCC’s program director for Trades & Technical Studies, emphasized the importance of developing skills that can transfer across automotive, diesel, welding, industrial maintenance, and other technical careers.

“We always come back to a term I like to call ‘transferable skills.’”

Those skills include mechanical aptitude, safe work practices, troubleshooting, tool use, and the ability to adapt as technology changes. Perriton also highlighted an important reality about today’s technical careers:

“These are high skilled technical professions that can be very well compensated.”

We are proud to see LCCC using the Switch Lab EV to create a real-world learning environment where students can build confidence, strengthen problem-solving skills, and prepare for the technologies they will encounter throughout their careers.

Congratulations to the students and instructors at Laramie County Community College. We look forward to seeing this bare chassis become a finished Switch Lab EV.
