Why play-based preschool?

When I watch children at play I am amazed and inspired by their ability to drop into the world of imagination. They have the Innate power to see what is not really there, yet act as if…
In our society so much of education tends to be results driven. We expect kids to retain information, produce and create based on what they have been taught. We want kids to show us their pretty artwork we want kids to sing us their sweet songs we want to know that they are learning. And that is all totally understandable and important as well. But I would like to highlight the importance of Free-play. There is no manual that shows kids how to make a fort out of the couch cushions or make up a parody of their parents….

Sometimes if I am being hard on myself I might judge this free time as being too laid-back or not having enough organized activities for the kids. But I also know how important it is for people to discover their own interests and passions and how wonderful it can be to have the space to explore and go deeper into something that excites and interests you.

When we turn off the screens and put down the schedules we open up the world for our children to delight in.

How wonderful that they are able to see the beauty in the smallest things and the wonder in something that we might take for granted.

I’m reminded of how doing less can often lead to more and that creating simplicity in our daily lives can be so rewarding when we are able to slow down and savor life.

So, I try to learn from the children who play and the dogs who are excited about every single walk and the cats who leisurely nap in the sun and the bees who flit from flower to flower looking for the sweetest nectar.

There is so much to learn from the simplest of acts such as pollination where we see the intimacy between flora and fauna…
Some of life‘s most profound experiences do not have a worksheet or a final product to show for it.

As parents and educators we have the opportunity to allow children to be themselves and find out who they are by setting down some of our expectations and just being curious. We can offer experiences, tools and insights as they navigate their reality, and we can appreciate our differences.
These are some of my thoughts on creative free play for children and adults alike!
