"This flag is a warning - it means runaway!!"
"Yeah, runaway from us!"
"Or! That - if you come to us we will give you poison candy and it will turn you into one of our crew!"
"We are looking for sea monsters - they are our friends."
"But if we see people...we fight them!"
"Why do you fight them?"
"Because we wanna have a big crew- the biggest crew - and we want them to join us!"
"But, so, we really just give them the candy, we don't really much fight them. The candy is the best way."
"Just so you know, the candy has ivy in it, and ivy is poisonous. Yeah, but we can eat ivy and it's fine - because that's our favorite one."
"We have the biggest crew now. Do you want some of this candy?"
Recently, the kids at Creekside have been very interested in the idea of ships, adventurers, and pirates! We decided to put together an adventure ship under our indoor loft, and the kids thought perhaps we needed a flag (or maybe ten flags!) to adorn our loft area with. Today, we got to work creating our first flag. We talked about what a flag on a ship is for - it's the way to tell people from far away who you are so they know whether it's a good idea to come say hello or not - and that each flag is different and how people design them together. The children sketched their ideas out in chalk, and then painted over them - they were delighted with the result!
