Wildflowers Nature School

Wildflowers Nature School Summer Camp and occasional other opportunities for nature connection Education has come so far from the original, innate way that humans learned for millennia.

Here at Wildflowers Nature School, we try to allow the space for the unfolding of inquisitiveness and exploration, for experiencing true wonder and connection in special moments in nature. Our focus is in 2 intertwining areas:
1) Nature connection - tracking, tree climbing, building with mud, bird watching, utilizing natural materials, sketching, hiking, & best of all exploring.

2) Sustainabl

e living skills
a) primitive skills such as campfire pottery, cordage, debris shelters, grass mat weaving, etc. b) homesteading skills such as gardening, animal husbandry, food preservation, etc. c) green building: cob, willow, solar

Our school is just 7 min. from downtown Sebastopol & 13 minutes to Santa Rosa. It's located on Mill Station Road, on 4 1/2 acres of amazing views, extensive gardens (CSA available!), orchard, meadows, and a nature trail that winds through the forest by a creek. We back to the gorgeous Atascadero Wetlands.

2 SPACES LEFT for Wildflowers summer camp July 21-25, 2025. My boy spots are full, but I have space for 2 girls. Every summer we immerse in nature, making trails and forts in the forest, playing in the creek, archery, nature crafts, bird language, primitive skills, learning about plants and animals and habitats and so much more. This year we might learn sketching, drying & using flowers, maybe natural dye, knife use, building a fire & more. All balanced with lots of games and nature play on almost 5 acres backing to the open Atascadero Valley. For more info, email "bev at wildflowerkids dot org " (looks funny to avoid spam). I don't check my facebook messages often.

For those who don't know, I closed the preschool in 2020. We thought we would be able to open again fall 2023, but we just didn't get enough sign-ups. Though the preschool is officially closed, we do offer SUMMER CAMP. This summer it will just be for 1 week, for ages 5-14, with a priority for preschool & homeschool alumni. I'll be releasing dates soon. Perhaps in future years, we'll add more weeks, more ages, more programs. Wildflowers Preschool was a fantastic chapter, but sadly it is in the past. THANK YOU to all who supported our preschool program for so many years.

I had announced here that we'd be reopening the preschool. That has changed, so I wanted to post the update here in case someone's inquiring about it. I'll be out of the country until August & won't be answering messages or emails. From 2008 to 2020, Wildflowers ran a very successful program including preschool, homeschool, summer camp, & sometimes an afterschool program. We started a camp back up last summer though we only offered it for one week a year this summer & last. The preschool was advertised & tours were given, but only 3 kids signed up, so we are honoring the reality that everything changes and one can never "go back", no matter how great that chapter of life was. Possibly in the future we'll offer occasional sessions of enrichment nature-connection classes or workshops, but none are set right now. We plan to offer another week of summer camp in 2024.

I would love to help someone open another nature school! We need more! If you know someone who wants to open one on their land or in parks, please pass my name along as I LOVE to mentor other teachers & have a ready-made-program and 40 yrs of experience in nature education I can share with them.

If you're looking for a preschool program, you could check these out to see if they have room:

All outside in a big wild-space park. I talked to the owners once & they sound great. If I had a 3 year old, this would be my 1st choice to check out.

I've known Rebecca, the owner of this & she's awesome. I heard a rumour she's found a different spot than Ragle Park. I hope you can get in touch with her.

I know the owners of this & their program well & it's awesome. Well established, amazing community to be a part of. We have the same root inspiration of our philosophy & program (Jon Young).

Great program! I know the owner of this, Mia, & her program well & we have the same roots. Great small-pod programs. Petaluma's the closest.

Recently I've heard from 2 parents and a teacher about this one. Sounds great.

Many Waldorf playgardens are very nature-based, though some say they are but still spend a lot of time indoors. Here's a list of playgardens:
In particular, I recommend these 2 that I've checked out:

-Azalea Cottage Playgarden. Sherri Chrichton is an awesome, cheery teacher. The kids are all outside, with a covered area of Waldorf materials, a cool fort bush, and a solid small program.

- https://www.saplingsforestplaygarden.com/ Christina's the most brilliant preschool teacher I've ever met. MA in music education I think. Their little spot directly connects to huge forest playground of co-housing.

If you're near Marin County, I spoke with owners & parents here & it sounds like a similar program to mine.

If you want a cheaper, co-op type forest school experience, try this. I don't know much about it. But I like the concept started by: https://richardlouv.com/books/last-child/

I wish everyone would read Last Child in The Woods. If they did, we'd have a different world. :)

If you find another program you'd like to recommend chime in.

Wildflowers Nature School advocates for youth connecting to nature and protecting the natural world. My friend Jamie & I are putting on this FUNDRAISER for ThulaThula Game Preserve and a group of teens who will be volunteering there, including my grandaughter Azalea. Jun24, 5-8pm, 445 Taft St. Great dance band, great OUTDOOR venue, great cause, great FOOD. To buy tickets, pre-purchase food, or JUST DONATE, either click QR code on flier or go to: https://my.cheddarup.com/c/awaking-dreams-funding-and-inspiring-global-travel?cart=c6bfdfcb-5500-41f7-8316-a2375d9c132a%21%2155533716

The teens will be traveling with girl scouts and learning life-changing history through Education First, then volunteering at ThulaThula, and then some will continue on to climb Kiliminjaro! A portion of the proceeds goes to ThulaThula which does awesome work helping protect endangered rhinos & elephants & other species.

It's mind-blowing how, at the rate of poaching for horns & tusks, for myths of health properties that modern people should know better than believe, we could lose these animals altogether. It's truly a crisis. Read the Elephant Whisperer or An Elephant In My Kitchen for a personal connection to ThulaThula.

Here are some links to learn more about the poaching crisis & ThulaThula:
