"There was a bitter taste upon your lips... it tasted, perhaps, like love."

Our upcoming production of Salome by Bruno Ravella, originally adapted from the Oscar Wilde play of the same name, places this biblical story in a modern, bunker-like setting, where the prophet John and the princess Salome go head to head (literally) in the confines of the cistern where he's held captive.

A battle between the sacred and profane—and arguably the ecstatic and grotesque—Salome makes us question our understanding of seduction, devotion, and insanity, all set against the backdrop of Strauss's haunting score and the infamous Dance of the Seven Veils.

Salome opens October 17 and is on stage through October 31. Get tickets at seattleopera.org/salome

Composer Gabriela Lena Frank started writing El ùltimo sueño de Frida y Diego in 2007. Over the next fifteen years of its creation, the story of painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera would evolve many times before it landed in the dream world Frank created with librettist Nilo Cruz.

At first, they tried "depicting too many parts of their lives," like Diego's affair with Frida's younger sister, and Frida's own brief entanglement with Leon Trotsky. "Those details dragged down the libretto," she said.

Rather than trying to create a biopic, Frank and Cruz set this imaginative story on El Día de los Mu***os (The Day of the Dead), where the bereaved widower Diego asks Frida to visit him from the underworld, Mictlan. Swayed more by the idea of returning for her art than her husband, she agrees.

We are heartbroken by the tragedy that occurred on Sunday, at what should have been a joyful celebration of our connection to each other through food.

Our hearts are with the victims and their loved ones, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence.

Today we grieve with our neighbors and community members over this terrible loss.

Comments on this post have been turned off out of respect for those impacted.

Come for the inside look, stay for the ASMR. Our Costume Crafts Supervisor, Miriam, had the ‘distressing’ task of distressing this leather jacket to looked aged and well-worn for our recent production of Carmen.

She started with a technique called “sagging and bagging,” filling the pockets with heavy chains to sag the pockets, and tying and clamping the back to create wrinkles. Then she hit it with the sandpaper to scuff up the edges, followed by some paint to create a worn texture (which has the added advantage of being reversible!).

The result was a gently worn out leather jacket for our smuggler, Remendado.
