September is already underway, and I owe you a little catch-up! 💛 I’ve been sick in bed with a fever all week, so this month’s calendar post is arriving a few days late - thank you for your patience!

There’s still A LOT of Blues happening this month, including:

🎶 Blues 1A Series - Wednesdays, Sept. 9-30
A four-week introduction to Blues dancing at Reverie Ballroom. Perfect for brand-new dancers or dancers returning from time away!

🪩 Reverie Blues Dance - Sept. 9 & 23
Our biweekly Wednesday night social, with a drop-in lesson followed by DJ’d dancing.

💙 Blues Underground - Friday, Sept. 18
Seattle’s longest-running Blues dance returns to Dance Underground with an all-levels lesson and dancing into the night.

🎤 Dangerous Rhythms Live: Elnah Jordan Dance & Book Release - Saturday, Sept. 19
A special night celebrating the release of "Dangerous Rhythms" - a Jazz and Blues History book by T.J. English. Featuring speeches by the author, live music by Elnah Jordan and more. More information will be announced soon!

📚 What the Blues - Tuesdays, Sept. 22 & 29
Come learn, practice, ask questions, and deepen your Blues dancing with Robin Chow at Lowdown Ballroom.

🌆 Hillman City Sway - Thursday, Sept. 24
Live Blues music, dancing, and an all-levels lesson at Black & Tan Hall.

🕺 Blues Dancing for Street Dancers - Saturday, Sept. 26
A special workshop exploring connections between Blues dance and street-dance movement. More info to come!

This Friday, we’re celebrating the future of Blues dance - and two members of our community who are stepping into it!

After training with SBDC, Alexandra Zinkus and Ryun Konze are teaching together as Instructors-in-Training one last time before graduating to become full SBDC instructors. Join them for our 8:30pm drop-in lesson, then stick around for a full night of dancing!

🎶 9:30pm–12am — Social dancing with Head DJ/DJ Mentor Alex Hanning + a surprise DJ for our second set

"You must be really confident to social dance."

We hear this all the time.

The truth? Many Blues dancers are introverts.

One of the things that makes social dancing so approachable is that there's built-in structure. You dance with one person for one song, then rotate. Every dance is a fresh start. If you need a moment to yourself, nobody thinks twice about it.

For a lot of us, it's actually easier than walking into a party where you're expected to mingle with dozens of strangers at once.

Reverie Ballroom's Blues dances happen every 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the Emerald Room and are designed to be welcoming to brand-new dancers and longtime community members alike.

Happy Juneteenth! 🖤❤️💚

Today is a day of celebration.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned that they were free - more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Since then, Juneteenth has become a celebration of Black freedom, resilience, culture, community, and joy.

As a Blues dance organization, we recognize that the music and dances we love would not exist without the creativity, artistry, and cultural contributions of Black Americans. Blues music and Blues dance emerged from Black communities and continue to tell stories of joy, connection, expression, perseverance, and celebration.

Today, we're especially grateful for the musicians, dancers, innovators, and culture bearers whose legacy lives on every time we step onto a dance floor.

And what better way to celebrate than by gathering in community?

Join us tonight for Blues Underground as we celebrate the music, the dance, and the rich cultural traditions that make this art form possible.

You came for the dance lesson.

You stayed because someone remembered your name.

Blues dancing has a funny way of turning strangers into familiar faces. One week you're nervously walking through the door. A few months later, you're catching up with friends, sharing snacks, swapping stories, and getting greeted with hugs before you've even made it to the dance floor.

(With consent, of course. We're still Seattle. 😄)
