🌿 One spot left for 2026–2027!
We have just ONE opening remaining for the upcoming school year at Mount Baker Preschool — a Waldorf cooperative in the heart of South Seattle.
Our mixed-age program (ages 3–5) runs 9 am – 1 pm, September through June. Families choose 3, 4, or 5 days per week. As a cooperative, parents can work in the classroom alongside our experienced teachers, building deep community while gaining real insight into their child's development.
What makes MBPS special:
🌿 Free, imaginative play — children direct their own learning through creative play, art, music, and storytelling
🌧️ Outdoors every day, rain or shine — daily nature walks, tree climbing, and all-weather play
🤝 A true cooperative — families are active partners in their child's education
🌈 A diverse, inclusive community where families from all backgrounds come together in our South Seattle neighborhood
✨ Beloved traditions — lantern walks, apple pressing, pumpkin patch trips, winter spiral, maypole dances, and more
💛 Scholarships & financial aid are available from our scholarship fund. We believe every child deserves a magical early education — please don't let cost be a barrier. Ask us about financial assistance.
📍 722 30th Ave S, Seattle

“Each of us is one small light, but together we shine bright. Go away deepest, darkest night. Go away, give way to light!”
As we prepared to celebrate lantern walk this week Teacher Carolyn told the story of a little boy and his grandmother who decide to make a little house to hold some of Father Sun’s light for the long dark winter ahead. Children have been hard at work making their own lanterns, and tonight our whole school community walked through the neighborhood swinging our lanterns and singing our songs about darkness and light.

We hope you will join us for our annual Halloween celebration! This free event is open to anyone. There will be crafts and our version of “trick or treating”. We will also have a bake sale with delicious treats benefitting the preschool.

Last week Teacher Carolyn told a “star apple” story about an apple tree and a star fairy, and children discovered that every apple holds a star inside. (You can find it by slicing the apple horizontally across the middle.)
On Monday children helped wash apples. On Tuesday Teacher Carolyn sliced them all (first finding their stars!) with lots of helpers to hand me the apples, then on Wednesday we cooked them and each child had a turn to help pass them through a food mill. As a special addition to our Wednesday popcorn snack, we served the applesauce for all to share. We used a variety of apple called Ruby Jon (from Tonnemakers at the CC market), which has white flesh and dark red skin, so the applesauce comes out pink.

Shared from a current parent:
“My child started this year with big feelings that really tugged on my tender mama heart that left me questioning why I was putting my kid through this.
During our first monthly parent meeting, Teacher Carolyn shared a lovely explanation about the roots of Waldorf and how the experience is cultivated in the classroom. Listening to her love for fostering childhood wonder and the reminder about the focus of the hands, the heart and the mind left me with a warm fuzzy blanket feeling. The school is such an intentional space. Each moment and physical object in the classroom has a deeper purpose. The kids consciously and subconsciously sponge up so much beauty and curiosity here.
During the meeting, the parents crafted this beautiful nature wall art, which is now hanging above the kid cubbies. I see it as a symbol of our school community coming together to create something beautiful.
This parent meeting just really solidified my heartfelt ‘YES’ to this school. My hands, heart and mind were supported and engaged.”

It has been wonderful watching the children explore our new outdoor space. This week’s games included a “dinosaur bones excavation” and “nature shop”.

We welcomed the children to our new space this week! Teachers Carolyn and Alyssa worked hard all summer to unpack and get the space ready, and parents put the finishing touches on during our classroom setup days last week. It was lovely to see the children playing with familiar toys and to get to know the new families in our community.
*Due to changes in family circumstances, we had a few families drop out late in the summer which has left some openings for the year. If you are interested in learning more or setting up a tour, please reach out via email or phone (contact info on our website).

Waldorf education emphasizes connections to nature and the seasons, and one way we incorporate nature into our school is through the Children’s Garden at . Throughout the year the children harvest, prepare, and even eat (!) a variety of fresh vegetables and produce from our garden. Some favorites include sorrel, raspberries, tomatillos, kale, fennel, and carrots.
