The Knotty Dawg, UW's human powered submarine had an exciting finish competing in London at the European International Submarine Races this summer! The team was especially proud of installing electronic joystick controls this year and having the first-ever finish by two female sub pilots! A&A team members Ahrif McKee, Luis Cortez, Lucas Campbell, and Riley Harris traveled to London for the competition. Interested students will have an opportunity to join the UWHPS - University of Washington Human Powered Submarine team this fall as it will start to build a new hull from scratch for the next two years of competition.

SODA – Reports from the Field

Colleagues with the -sponsored Stratified Ocean Dynamics of the Arctic (SODA) Team are aboard the R/V Sikuliaq this month providing regular field updates. “What sets the distribution and mixing rates of heat in the upper Arctic Ocean?” is a question they are trying to answer. They’ve equipped the vessel with various tools to sample water layers and mixing, and to image surface waves and turbulent fluxes in the atmosphere.

VISIONS’13

In late August 2013 the installation of the world’s largest undersea observatory reached a major milestone. “Plugging into” the deep ocean became a reality with the successful installation of power and communication cables, junction boxes, and the first scientific instruments — including the high-definition video camera deployed in the caldera of Axial Seamount to view an active high-temperature hydrothermal vent.

At last, we deploy our science assets! The .apl team uses dropsondes to study the interaction between clouds and sea ice, and airborne expendable current and conductivity-temperature-depth probes to understand the ocean's activity and composition under the ice. And finally, the buoy goes out the back in a picture-perfect deployment. Success!

Hello all! I'm Sarah Dewey, a graduate student at and the AGU for the next few days. I study the Arctic Ocean, especially the Beaufort Sea seasonal ice zone north of Alaska. I'm part of the .apl field project, which measures the ocean's and atmosphere's physical properties to try to understand the impacts of and on the seasonally-varying sea ice cover. Here I am in the field aboard a Twin Otter, preparing to deploy ocean sensors into holes in the ice. Stay tuned for some more awesome photos of fieldwork and sea ice!
