Congratulations to Stephanie Masterman for earning her Defender Level 1 certification!

If you've attended any of our Self Defense workshops or seminars, you may have been lucky enough to meet Stephanie. On top of her own training as an MKG student, she has been stepping up to assist our instructors and help run those events.

Self defense can be a heavy and difficult topic, but Stephanie's knowledge, patience and compassion as an instructor has given many people an opportunity to build skills and confidence to keep themselves safe.

We're proud of you, Stephanie! Thank you for all of your hard work!

A couple days later and I’m still processing. Received my black belt in CSBJJ from Professor Erik Paulson on Sunday. To say I was/am surprised is an understatement.

I have always believed the rank of black belt in BJJ to be something demanding a higher level of competence, knowledge and time to mature than in other methods of martial art. Achieving this rank feels like a responsibility that I’m going to strive to honor.

I took my first grappling seminar with Coach Erik in the early 90’s at Greg Nelson’s school. With both of us coming from the Minnesota Kali Group he has always been my role model in grappling, shooto and now BJJ. His open mindedness and white belt mentality is an inspiration. It means the world to me to receive this honor from him 30+ years later.

So, thank you Coach Erik.

I have to give a special shout out to Professor Brian Johnson. One of the most talented practitioners and gifted teachers imaginable. I’m very lucky to have had the time and relationship with him and between our schools that I did.

Thank you to my senior students who stopped by to witness my promotion. Very nice of you to make the drive to be there.

It was also special to have done the seminar this weekend with my wife and son and to have my daughter and dog there. Ha.
