Speaking of wins, one of my beloved students, who has been studying with me since June of 2022, just released a few songs (accompanied by Jeff Goodkind and Chris Stone) on Spotify! I am so proud of the hard work she puts into her music and so overjoyed she is putting her voice out into the universe. Kareena will be a senior in high school this year! Time sure flies!

Please enjoy her wonderful recordings! 🫶🏽❤️🫶🏽❤️

Kacey Musgraves has called on a trio of mariachi-playing brothers, who were detained by ICE earlier this year, to open three of her shows in Texas next month.

The Gámez-Cuéllar brothers, Antonio, Caleb, and Joshua, will support Musgrave May 3 to May 5 at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. The gigs are part of Musgraves’ upcoming Middle of Nowhere tour. 👏🏼

When my students want to work on a cover… I encourage them to make it their own. Find their own voice, be true to their own story and stay true to their own sound.

Here’s an extreme example of this!!! lol! Enjoy!!!

Congratulations to my hard-working super-amazing private voice student, Miriam, for getting accepted into Berklee College of Music and with a renewable scholarship!🎉

When Miriam came to me for lessons, she had a goal in mind, “I want to get into a music program because music is my life and this is what I want to do for the rest of my life! It’s my biggest passion!”

I did not make any promises, and told her that if she works extra hard in her lessons and at school, I could not see any reason why she wouldn’t get into a good program and make this dream happen for her!

This young woman is not only very skilled at singing, but also in songwriting and music producing! She dives right into any opportunity to perform, not only because she loves it, but also because she knows these experiences will help her to grow!

I’m so very proud of Miriam! Congratulations!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️🎉🎉🎉

Obamas are the epitome of class, leadership, power, love and hope! ❤️

I watched “Becoming” last night. It was so beautiful, inspiring, empowering and hopeful. I had tears of loss and tears for a healed future.

With all the terror, horror and betrayal unfolding around us… I truly needed to watch this film that reminded me that there is still truth and inner beauty in humans (clearly not all… but enough), who will prevail. Love, goodness and compassion wins in the end. It must. ❤️❤️❤️

"If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s the power of using your voice." - Michelle Obama

I’ve felt guilty about not being out on the pavement every weekend… Watching the film, Michelle mentioned that what we do in our work (job, organizational work, arts, whatever we consider is “our work”), we must do it with all our being and knowing we are doing “the work” when we do the best we can.

I use my voice every single day, to teach voice… not just singing, but to help students connect authentically to their own voices with their song texts, the vocal line and to find groundedness in their breath, their core, their body and being. When I watch and listen to my students, I hear their hearts, their stories and their compassion through the text of their songs that they may or may not directly relate with; but it’s still from somewhere honest and true. I help them explore the many sides and sounds their voice; give them permission to let go and make “mistakes” (in quotes because really “mistakes” should be called “the journey” because it’s all a journey to a personal/individual destination… doesnt even need to be a “perfect” destination).

Which leads me to another Michelle quote,
"I’m not raising babies; I’m raising adults." Whether my own kiddos, or my student (a child, young adult or full-grown middle-aged human like myself (lol)), after they leave my studio (in person or virtual) and they go back out into the world, my hope is that they grew a little more than when they first stepped into my class. And if they didnt this week, maybe they do next week… I don’t give up on them. ❤️❤️❤️🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
