The Invent at Seattle Children's Postdoctoral Scholars Program is excited to share video four of this special five-part series.
Meet Dr. Stephen Carney, a postdoctoral scholar whose passion for science began with a curiosity about cellular behavior – how cells respond to changes and the processes that lead to cancer. Originally from Kent, Michigan, Stephen moved to Seattle to be part of the vibrant biotech ecosystem, where he could further his research and contribute to the field.
Through the Invent@SC program, Stephen has benefited from the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between academia and industry. He has gained invaluable experience in leading projects, exploring different research areas, and collaborating with experts.
A final program overview video will be released in two weeks. Please share these videos widely to help us recruit talented early career scientists who are passionate about discovering novel therapeutics and launching biotech initiatives.

Did you know that Seattle Children's is a world leader in the treatment of childhood cancers using CAR-T cell immunotherapy? Last week, students from Kentlake High School in Kent School District learned how CAR-T cells are used to help a patient's own immune system fight cancer. In the Science Discovery Lab, they completed a procedure to isolate white blood cells from whole (sheep) blood and learned how to view and count them under the microscope!

It's amazing to see students react with wonder when they see DNA appear in front of their eyes! Fourth and fifth graders at Seahurst Elementary in Highline Public Schools could hardly believe how much DNA they isolated from strawberries last week. One of the best parts of teaching from the Seattle Children's Science Adventure Lab is getting to share the fun of science with kids all over Washington State!

How can we quickly stop an infectious disease outbreak? That's the question 8th graders from Lakeridge Middle School tackled in the Seattle Children's Science Discovery Lab last week. Students completed a DNA fingerprinting experiment to match the DNA banding pattern of bacteria taken from a "patient" with foodborne illness with the DNA patterns of bacteria from five suspect foods. Students used their lab research skills to complete a gel electrophoresis experiment and correctly identify the food responsible for the outbreak!

Last week, 5th and 6th graders from Terrace Park Elementary in Edmonds School District learned all about blood! They explored the parts and functions of blood and then worked together in teams to complete a simulated blood typing test. They were so excited to use micropipettes and discover the blood types of their "patient" samples, just like scientists do every day in our labs at Seattle Children's.
