Cohort 14 began their Seattle Teacher Residency journey this week! ✏️📕🍎

What’s in store for them?
☀️ The rest of the summer will be spent learning interactively about justice & the diversity of the Seattle community

🍁 This fall & winter they will continue UW coursework while also heading into the classroom to co-teach & learn from seasoned mentor teachers

🌼 in the spring of 2027 they will graduate with a masters in teaching degree from UW!

🏫 and finally will get their own full-time classrooms in the fall of 2027!

Wish them luck these next 15 months - it will be hard and it will go by fast!

🎉 Congratulations to Culturally Sustaining Education doctoral candidate Malcolm King (advisor: Dr. Maggie Beneke) on receiving both the 2026 Harlan Hahn Award from the UW Disability Studies Program and the Gatzert Child Welfare Fellowship!

The Harlan Hahn Award supports Malcolm’s dissertation research examining Black disabled children’s agency across classroom and community spaces, while the Gatzert Child Welfare Fellowship will support the writing of his dissertation findings chapters. Together, these honors recognize the significance of scholarship that centers children’s voices, experiences, and contributions to their communities.

Meet Dr. Manka Varghese, Program Director of the Language, Literacy and Culture (LLC) program at the University of Washington College of Education.

Dr. Varghese shares how the LLC program prepares educators, researchers and leaders to support learners, advance equity, and make an impact in diverse communities. Through a flexible, interdisciplinary curriculum, the program helps students develop the knowledge and skills needed to create more inclusive and effective learning environments.

Dr. Matthew Gardner Kelly, assistant professor of Educational Foundations, Leadership, and Policy, was recently awarded an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship to support four weeks of research in residence at the Massachusetts Historical Society for his current book project.

Dr. Lakeya Afolalu, assistant professor of Language, Literacy, and Culture, and her research team recently received grants from the UW Campus Sustainability Fund and the UW Student Technology Fee to support the Seattle Multilingual Collective, a community-engaged research project with multilingual youth of color in Seattle.

The funding will help expand the initiative’s digital and sustainability-focused work as the team prepares to share their research at a national conference this fall.
