“Trichomes are unicellular or multicellular epidermal protrusions found on most aerial plant tissue.
There are two major types of trichomes, non-glandular and glandular.
While non-glandular trichomes are more simple hair like appendages, glandular trichomes are typically complex multicellular structures made of differentiated basal, stalk and apical cells.
They are characterised by the presence of cells able to synthesise, secrete and store large quantities of specialised secondary metabolites.
Trichomes play an essential role in:
a. defence against natural hazards such herbivores and pathogens,
b. provide protection against abiotic factors such as UV and drought stress,
c. and are involved in pollinator attraction.
Many of the specialised secondary metabolites produced by glandular trichomes have become commercially important for their use as natural pesticides*, food additives**, fragrance ingredients*** and pharmaceuticals****."
