🌞 Chinese Language + Cultural Arts = A Bright Summer at Chong Wa School!

Our 3 week 2026 Chong Wa School Summer Language & Culture Camp wrapped up on August 7, filled with joyful learning and hands on cultural experiences.
Students learned Mandarin through Let’s Learn Chinese and explored folk dance, diabolo, and knot craft with our amazing instructors—Wenny Wu, Victor Lin, Liang Chen, and Sylvia Ma—supported by two dedicated teaching assistants. The small class environment made every activity engaging, interactive, and memorable.
We were honored to welcome Professor Cheng Hao Sung and five PhD candidates from National Sun Yat sen University for an academic visit. Chairman Jay Lin and committee members guided them through the Chong Wa Benevolent Association, our facilities, and live classroom observations. Special thanks to Communitea Project Executive Director Jeremy Smith and instructor Kathy Tien for joining the discussion forum.
Principal Jay Lin praised students for their hard work and expressed gratitude to the Overseas Community Affairs Council and the Culture Center of TECOS for their continued support. We look forward to enhancing next year’s camp and continuing to share the beauty of Chinese language and culture with our community.

TCML-Chong Wa School Welcomes NWACLS teacher conference's Keynote Speakers for 7/14 Educational Exchange Visit

On July 14, TCML-Chong Wa School proudly hosted two keynote speakers, Ya-Ying Huang and Weiching Wang, from the NWACLS Summer Teacher Conference, marking a meaningful moment of cross‑regional collaboration in Mandarin education. The visiting educators from Taiwan, accompanied by the President of NWACLS, spent the morning engaging with Chong Wa's education committee members-Betty, Liang, Jay and Judy to exchange insights on curriculum design, instructional strategies, and community‑based language learning.

The visit began with a warm welcome in Classroom, where Chong Wa education commuttee prepared a forum space for dialogue and sharing. The discussion highlighted the unique strengths of heritage‑language programs in Seattle and the innovative approaches used in Taiwan’s Mandarin classrooms. Both sides emphasized the importance of cultural immersion, student engagement, and teacher professional development.

A special contribution came from Betty, who introduced her StarTalk program and its growing influence on Mandarin teacher training across the Seattle area. Her presentation underscored how federal language initiatives can strengthen local educator networks and expand opportunities for students.

This exchange visit not only deepened professional ties between Taiwan and Seattle’s Mandarin education communities but also reaffirmed Chong Wa School’s commitment to fostering global perspectives and high‑quality language learning experiences for all students.

Program Highlights
This summer camp is built on a fully immersive Mandarin environment, using diverse and highly interactive lesson designs to help children encounter and use Chinese naturally. The curriculum integrates language learning, cultural experiences, art projects, and team activities, allowing children to develop comprehension and expressive skills in a relaxed and enjoyable setting while gradually building confidence in communicating in Mandarin.

Mandarin-Themed Lessons
Focusing on everyday life scenarios, these lessons guide children in learning practical Mandarin conversation. Through situational dialogues, role playing, and interactive practice, children express themselves in natural exchanges and steadily strengthen their ability to understand and use Mandarin.

Festival and Cultural Experiences
Through festival stories, cultural activities, and hands on experiences, children explore key aspects of Chinese culture—such as traditional holidays, customs, and daily cultural practices—building meaningful cultural connections through participation and sharing.

Diabolo (Chinese Yo Yo) and Dance
By combining traditional folk arts with movement based activities, children develop coordination and rhythm as they learn diabolo techniques and dance routines, while also experiencing the performing arts within Chinese culture.
Creative Arts & Crafts
Art and craft activities encourage children to express creativity and imagination. As they create with their hands, they also communicate and share ideas in a fully Mandarin-speaking environment.

Games and Team Activities
Through group games and cooperative challenges, children naturally use Mandarin while interacting and laughing with peers. Activities emphasize teamwork and communication, helping children build confidence in the language in a relaxed setting.

Stories and Reading
Using picture books and reading activities, children are guided to understand story content, express ideas, and share perspectives. Listening to stories and reading helps them gradually develop language intuition and an interest in reading.
